Mass Divisional State Track champs at Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic
Center, Roxbury, Mass. 200 meter banked Mondo facilty.
The Massachusetts State Meet takes place at Reggie Lewis on Friday evening,
February 25th. The top five in each class qualify for the meet. The
next best four performances in an event (any class) also qualify for
the State Meet.D-III Champs – Friday evening 2/18/05
Teams: All Central Catholic Lawrence - Boys and Girls
Boys: Central Catholic 46; Newton South 40
Girls: Central Catholic 51; Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. 36
Distance Events
Boys
In the 1,000 meters Ruben Sanca (JD O’Bryant-Roxbury) lead all
the way going 62.6-2:04.5 and winning easily in 2:35.65. Craig Fiore
(Fitchburg) made a big closing effort but could not get any closer than
8 yards. The Boys One Mile belonged to Brian Ford (Central Catholic,
Lawrence). Ford ran a solo 4:34.9 and added big points early for Central
Catholic.
Caleb Fall (Whitman-Hanson Reg.) took command of the two mile with 880
left, putting in a strong 73.0 last 440 to win easily.
Girls
The 1,000 had a crowded field but with 150m to go Caroline Sheedy (Reading)
took off and moved away from the field to win by a substantial margin.
Sheedy’s time was 3:09.57. Kasey Black (Whitman-Hanson Reg) was
the leader in the girls mile until the last 150m when Caitlin McDermott-Murphy
(Newton South) unleashed a powerful sprint, clicking off a 35..6 last
200 to establish herself as favorite for the States next weekend. Hannah
Masse (Ftichburg), like Black in the mile, was the leader (5:33.8) all
the way when with a lap and a half to go Kristin Martin (soph-Central
Catholic) dropped a 77 last 400 and went on the an easy 11:19.79. Martin’s
time was the # 7 time US.
Sprint Events
Boys
Andrew Smith (Lincoln-Sudbury Reg.) and Sean McCusker (Westford Academy)
battled through the 400 (54.1) until Smith edged in front to win in
1:24.12, McCusker second in 1:24.21. Merzudin Ibric (Revere), one of
the top 200m runners in the US, clocked 35.41 in his trial race, good
enough to equal # 20 in the US this season. In the final he had a fight
on his hands with Alex Ellsworth (Agawam). Ellswoth nearly had the lead
at the break point, but Ibric stormed to the front and to win in :35.18,
equals # 11 US. Ellsworth was next in :35.60. Stephen Headley (Minnechaug
Reg. – Wilburham) was the standout all day. Besides being the tallest
athlete in the spring fieid he won his trial, SF and sped to a quick,
and decisive, win with a 6.58. Aaron Fears (No. Attleboro) was second
in 6.65.
Girls
Outdoor 800 placed Emily Boudreau (jr-Longmeadow) had the lead at 400
and ran a comfortable 1:38.73 to win. Second went to Rebecca Droms (Westford
Acad.) in 1:40.77. Shanika Pitts (Oliver Ames-N.Easton) set the sprint
tone early, as she zipped to a :41.19 trial # 30 US and # 19 MA all
time. In the final Pitts did not seem to leave many spike marks on the
track as she flew to a very fast :41.09. # 26 US and # 6 MA all-time.
Danielle Meder (Chicopee) and Amanda Pope (Minnechaug) were 2-3 respectfully
in :42.00 and :42.03 Coreen Edwards (JD O’Bryant-Roxbury) made
sure she would not lose on her home track as she won her trial, SF and
final in 7.39.
Field Events:
Boys
Nate Hunter (Gloucester) won the Shot by over six feet as he pounded
out a 56’02.5”winning throw. Jeff Moreau (Whitman-Hanson Reg.)
won the Long Jump with a leap of 21’03”. Thomas Marquis (Snowden,
Boston) had three good jumps at 6’07” but was the winner at
6’05” beating Mark Anderson (Natick) who cleared 6’03”.
Girls
Keri Branquinho and Amy Ferreira, both from Dartmouth HS, went 1-2 with
tosses of 35’05.5” and 35’04.75. Ali Sax (Lincoln-Sudbury)
won the long jump at 16’10”. Anja Hergrueter (Newton South),
Sarah Conway (Fitchburg) and TyLynn Graham (North Attleboro) attempted
5’08” but none cleared. Hergrueter was the winner on misses.
Relays:
Boys
Minnechaug won the 4x200 with Stephen Headley (55 winner) running a
great anchor. Minnechaug won in 1:33.79. Lincoln-Sudbury won the 4x400
as they edged by Central Catholic in the home straight to win in 3:31.07,
Central was second in 3:32.22. In the 4x800 Central Catholic and Lincoln-Sudbury
pounded heads the whole way, but Central just getting the nod as they
clocked 8:27.13 over LS who ran 8:27.34.
Girls
JD O’Bryant (Roxbury) was the leader all the way as Coreen Edward
anchored the team in 1:47.56. Westford Academy and Central Catholic
battled Reading in the 4 x 400 with Westford coming in first, 4:10.31,
and Central second in 4:12.84 with Reading 4:12.99.
Newton South came from behind at the end. After all they have “Mighty
Mite” McDermott-Murphy. Caitlin pounded out a 2:21 anchor and put
NS on the winer’s podium at 9:54.95. Reading was second in 10:02.72.
Div. IV – Saturday morning 2/19/05

Boys
Dedham’s Rex Radloff and Hopdale’s Thompson Ogilivie battled
through a 4:54.4 mile. Radloff then opened up a good enough lead with
3 laps to go, and tacked on a last 400 in :68.5 to secure the victory
in 9:47.97. Ogilivie was second in 9:50.34. In the Mile Mike Waters
(Bedford) and Nate Sharpe (Canton) battled most of the way with Waters
the winner in 4:34.53. The 1,000 was the tightest race of the day (except
for the 55 dash.) Fjodor Melnikov (Foxboro) and Ross Turner (Mohawk
Trail) battled tooth and nail with Melnikov just winning in 2:41.29
over Turner’s 2:41.32.
Girls:
The two mile was a great race. Bromfield School’s eighth grader
Emily Jones and Marian-Framingham sophomore Helena Halterman battling
all the way. Halterman took the victory with a strong 78.2 last 400.
Halterman won in 11:39.11, while Jones second in 11:40.15. The One Mile
belonged to Marblehead’s Kylynn McKinley, a wire-to-wire champion.
McKinley secured victory with a 5:20.78 clocking. In the 1,000 Weston’s
Allison Ritter made a big push on the last lap to pull away from the
field and win in 3:02.10.
Sprint Events:
Boys
Doug Caves (Oxford) continued his dominance in the 600 as he ran :58.6
through his 400 and continued on to finish in 1:22.16 a new meet record
and the # 18 600 in the US.
The 300 was all Dave Lint of Foxboro. Dave had the fastest time in the
trial and won his final in convincing fashion as he came home in :36.08.
The 55 winner was Jason Urdang (Westwood) in 6.64 just inching Jesse
Bruinsma (Lynnfield) 6.65. Brandon Palmer (Mohawk Trial) was the hurdle
winner in 7.91 defeating Scott Regan (Marblehead) 7.91 in a time carried
out to the 1000’s.
Girls
Grace Kerr (Hamilton-Wenham) won the race in spite of an “official
error.” Grace was seeded second with a legitimate time. The Meet
management changed her time, assuming it was done at yards, not meters.
This put Grace in the second unseeded heat. Her coach protested, but
to no avail. So, grace popped a :64.3 400 and went to record a 1:39.89.
When the seeded was finished Lily Calderwood (Bromfield), won the seeded
heat in 1:39.92. Kerr’s time held up for the win. The 300 belonged
totally to the defending champion, Holly Heinricher (Foxboro). Holly
won her trial and then posted a :42.24 in the final. The dash belonged
to Ashley Mecone (Hopkinton) as she defeated her teammate Angela Hrusovky
7.51 to 7.57. The hurdles winner was Old Rochester Reg-Mattapoisett
Sophomore Stephanie Reusch in 8.73.
Field Events:
Boys
Adrian Li (Canton) won the High Jump with a leap of 6’03”
Brandon Palmer (Mohawk Trail), winner of the hurdles, took the Long
Jump with a leap of 21’08”.
Andy Bettina (Hopkinton) won the Shot Put in 52’02”
Girls:
Annie McNerney (jr-Swampscott) won on misses over Teddi Curtis (sr-Marblehead)
as both jumped 5’04”. Ashley Mecone (sr-Hopkinton), won her
second event, sailing out 16’08.25” to win the Long Jump.
Emily Daly (Hopkinton) threw 36’05.25” for a win in the Shot
Put.
Relay Events
Boys
Different winners in all three races. Mohawk Trail secured the team
title winning the 4x200 in 1:35.63. Foxboro, anchored by Dave Lint,
won the 4x400 in 3:29.13. Hopkinton won the 4x800 in a meet record of
8:24.29
Girls
Hopkinton’s Ashley Mercone picked up her third gold medal as her
first leg gave her team the lead. It was never close as the Hopkinton
girls ran 1:49.73 for an easy win. Bromfield won the 4 x400 in 4:09.25
over Marian-Framingham’s 4:09.82. In the 4x800 Marblehead’s
Kylynn KcKinley turned in a nice anchor to secure her team the victory
with a time of 10:05.36. Bromfield was second in 10:08.56.
Div. I – Saturday afternoon 2/19/05

Boys
Two Mile: Newton North’s Chris Barnicle made his first appearance
at a major high school meet since winning Millrose, and he was impressive.
Barnicle “jogged with the field” for the first seven laps
then he took over just a step before the mile mark (4:55.7). He then
ran 69.3-67.1-72.2-69.7 – 4:38.3 second mile. He actually eased
off the last lap to run 9:34.45, the # 6 US time. In the Mile Newton
North’s David Polgar , Xaverian’s Mark Amirault and Lexington’s
Bryan Longo all shared leading duties. Amirault and Longo tried to get
away several times, but could not succeed. At the gun Polgar went to
the lead and ran a :29.2 last 200 to win in 4:31.76. Amirault was second
in 4:32.03 and Longo next in 4:34.60. A fast 1,000 was in store and
that was what the crowd got. Brian Gagnon (Lowell) and Willi Ballenthin
(Lexington) moved out on the fled away from the field. Ballenthin jumped
Gagnon at the bell as both passed the 800 in 2:00. Full speed ahead,
and the last straight was intense as Gagnon just managed to slip by
Ballenthin to win in 2:30.53, a meet record. Equals # 5 in the US. Ballenthin
also broke the old meet record as he clocked 2:30.93 # 7 in the US.
Girls:
Chelmsford senior Megan Curran did not wait for help in the two mile.
[There was none.} She went right to the lead running 5:34.5 first mile
and a 120 yard lead. She continued her solo run, lapping runners, and
finished in 11:28.69, # 11 US.. In the mile it was a Newton North affair
as state x-c champ soph Jess Barton claimed first in 5:11.06 and sr.
Anna Schindler second in 5:13.86. In the 600 North’s sr. Lizzie
Fulton added more points as she passed the 400 in 63.2 and sprinted
away from the field with 150 left to run an easy 1:35.90, and the #
12 US 600 in the US this season.
Sprints
Boys
Robert Kaufman’s (sr. Andover) coach was thinking of scratching
him from the event until the seed list came out. Then coach thought
“maybe he can place”. Kaufman exceeded his coaches expectations
as he inched by Lawrence Enrique Cuesta to win in 36.10. Cuesta was
second in 36.13. In the dash Johan Rafael (Lawrence) dominated the field
winning a 6.54, while the hurdles could have used a camera on both sides
of the finish as Brookline’s Jason Nardella and Xaverian’s
Zack Azak were a mirror-like at the finish. Nardella getting the win
in 7.54 and Zack second in 7.55.
Girls
Brockton junior Ebony Cotterell left no doubt as she cruised to a 41.28
victory over Bridgewater-Raynham’s surprising sophomore Mary Zolga’s
41.71. Mandella Graves-Fulgham (sr.-Amherst Reg.) was very impressive
as she clocked 7.20 to win by several meters. Natalie Crutchfield (Acton-Boxboro
Reg.) was second in 7.37. Melissa Carr (Chelmsford) broke the meet record
winning in 8.48.
Field Event
Boys
Lexington sophomore Meikle Pashcall was impressive in the High Jump
as he won the event at 6’05”, but had two very close tries
at 6’08” inches. Next week will be his week.
Ross Roballo (New Bedford), Jed Carpenter (Newton North) and William
Stillman (Xaverian) all cleared 6’03”. Steven Gerome (Waltham)
won the Long Jump in 21’02.5” just ahead on the 21’00”
jump of Shane Paull (Plymouth South), The Shot Put belonged to Bo, Chris
Bo (Somerville) as he won by three feet 53’09.75”
Girls
Marlee Berg (sr-Chelmsford) won the High Jump in 5’04”. Natalie
Cruthfield (Acton-Boxboro Reg.) on the Long Jump with a 17’06.5”
leap, beating Amherst’s Mandala Graves-Fulgham’s 17’05.75
leap. The Shot Put belonged to Paula Morgan (North Quincy) with a toss
of 34’06.5”
Relays
Can you say Newton North? Two firsts and a fourth. Newton won the 4x800
relay in a meet record 8:06.10 # 15 US as mile winner Dave Polgar ran
2:00 third leg to give two mile winner Chris Barnile the lead. Barnicle
ran a controlled 1:57.5 anchor. Lexington was second in 8:12.78. The
4x400 was another Newton win also as they ran 3:27.00 Jed Carpenter
got the stick in the lead and ran :50.7 for an easy win. Lawrence’s
sprint power showed as they went a wire-to-wire win in 1:31.91. Lawrence
has had some sickness, but this team is getting healthy and faster.
Girls
It’s Newton again! Newton North dominated the 4x800 event as Anna
Schlinder, mile runner-up, opened with a 2:27.7 carry and a 5 meter
lead. That was the race. Jess Barton, mile winner, anchored in 2:26
and NN ran an unpressed 9:50.61. Haverhill was second in 9:57.0. In
the 4 x 400 guess what? It’s Newton North again. They ran a meet
record 4:04.32 as they put 600 winner Lizzie Fulton in the lead. Fulton
clocked a impressive :58.6 carry. Bridgewater-Raynham was second in
4:05.59. The Newton North girlos ran first, so the NN boys had to equal
the girls. Cambridge Rindge & Latin 4x200 just keeps on winning.
Cambridge has not lost a 4x2 race this season and their 1:45.43 meet
record to keep the string going. Acton-Boxboro was second in 1:47.10.
Lost in the crowd was a bad last pass by Amherst-Pelham. Mandalla Graves-Fulgham
had to stop near the end of the zone, to get the pass. Her carry was
a :26.0 leg.
Div. III – Sunday afternoon 2/20/05
Teams:

Distance Events
Boys
Josh Boone (sr-Gardner), state x-c runner-up to Chris Barnicle tried
to send a message, a 9:38.14 message, # 14 US. Boone and Matt Meagher
(sr-Mansfield) traded the lead – 4:52.3 mile. The lap trading continued
until Boone got to two laps to go. He then hit a :67.0 to secure the
victory. Chris Murray (sr-Wilmington) went out to about a 30 yard lead.
But with 300 to go Kyle Ingersoll (Stoneham) put on a big surge, creating
a buzz in the crowd. But Kyle’s drive fell 8 yards short as Murray
won in 4:31.41 to Ingersoll’s 4:32.32. Matt Dewey (soph.-Catholic
Memorial-W.Roxbury) ran a strong last 200 to win in 2:38.63 and hold
off Charlie Meade (Wellesley) 2:38.80 and John Lutkevich (Mansfield)
2:38.87.
Girls
Alex Krieg # 2 US 2-mile 10:57.29!!. Alexandra Krieg (sr-Wellesley)
showed the crowd her race plans early going 76.4 / 2:38.4 through 800
and left the rest of the field staggering. Passing the mile in 5:26.1
– [would’ve won the one mile] – Alex clipped 85-84-84.5
and 77.5 to end in 5:31.1. Her junior teammate, Brielle Chabot, was
way back, but her 11:11.63 – almost unnoticed, ranks # 4 in the
US. Nice going Wellesley!! In the One mile Mansfield sr. Katie Brague
ran just hard enough to post a 5:28.86 win over Wakefield frosh Hanna
Merullo’s 5:29.03. Winchester junior Katarina Eidman, returning
from an injury, destroyed the with a seven second victory. Eidman’s
time was 3:00.98 field, # 25 in the US.
Sprint Events
Boys
Mike Stein (sr-Wayland) had a big last 150 sprint as he just pulled
away from the rest of the field and won by two seconds. His time of
1:22.41, good enough for # 27 US. After his race Josh received a reprimand
from officials because he raised his arms in triumph and waved to the
crowd. [No hidden phones though.] Todd Kittelson (sr-Shrewsbury) won
the 300 meter’s in a meet record time of :35.45. Ron Conway (sr.
Bishop Feehan-Attleboro) was a surprise winner in the dash, beating
the field by a clear body length, in 6.62. Christopher Dietsch (sr-Tewksbury)
topped the field with a 7.76.
Girls
Allison Cuozzo (jr-King Philip-Wrentham) won the 600m as a freshman,
and as a soph, and now her junior race. Guess it’s Allison’s
event. She held off two Bishop Feehan runners to win her third 600m
in 1:39;16. Meghan Callahan (jr-Apponoquet Reg.-Lakeville) had the fastest
qualifier. In the final she used her quick speed to get to the break
first and then held off Marlborough’s Alex Blakeslee. Callahan
won in 41.06 # 18 US. Blakeslee was 41.66. In the dash Winthrop’s
Jen Katz won in 7.41, while Courtney Lincoln (jr-Mansfield) won the
hurdles in 8.73.
Field Events
Boys
Fadil Cantave (soph-Catholic Memorial-W. Roxbury) won the High Jump
in 6’01”, the same height as four other jumpers. Courtney
Evans (sr-Milton) set a meet record in the Long Jump with 22’01.25”jump.
Tom Cushing (sr-Hingham) won the Shot Put by four feet with a throw
of 53’07.75.
Girls
Belmont sophomore Grace Watson went 5’04” to win the High
Jump. Mansfield’s Courtney Lincoln won her second event (55H),
Long Jump, sailing 17;05.50. Sade Williams (sr-Scituate) continued her
dominance of the state Shot Put winning in 40’01.25”
Relay Events
Boys
The Wayland 4x800 team led all the way, won by 30 yards in 8:25.64.
The 4x400 title went to Mansfield 3:31.88, holding off Tewksbury who
ran 3:32.65. Wayland won the sprint relay in a meet record of 1:33.00.
Girls
Bishop Feehan-Attleboro opened up a big lead in the 4x800, but it was
up to Meg Casey to hold off Scituate’s Alyse Kennedy. Feehan won
in 10:04.10 with Scituate next in 10:04.32. Unheraled Marlborough struck
again in the 4x400. Marlboro led all the way as they clocked a 4:10.82
to win. Tewksbury Memorial won the 4x200 in a two second margin with
a 1:46.68.The Massachusetts State Meet takes place at Reggie Lewis on
Friday evening, February 25th. The top five in each class qualify for
the meet. The next best four performances in an event (any class) also
qualify for the State Meet.
