Byrne's Day One Report:
Bloodless 'Toga
laps field at Brown.
Day one of the 23rd Annual Brown University Invitational was held Monday
12/27 on the flat 200m track in Olney-Margolies Athletic Center, despite
the 8" snowfall that blanketed the Providence area from yesterday
afternoon until the wee hours of this morning.
In one of only two Championship running events...the Girls DMR [the
Boys was the other] , on today's schedule, turned into yet another
runaway for the Girls from Saratoga Springs. Running without
their all-American miler--Nicole Blood [hence: Bloodless] their
quartet of Caitlin Lane (3:40.8) - Alysha McElroy (63.1)
- Karyn Delay (2:19.5) & Lindsey Ferguson (5:01.6)
clocked 12:03.03 leading from wire-to-wire, lapping the field
early in Ferguson's leg.
The Boys DMR was a bit more competitive, with Shaker [Latham,
NY] duke-ing it out until the final 100m with Syosset, NY, with
Shaker's crew of Daren Myers [3:15.8] - Mike Kippins (53.4}
- Jared Jupin [1:59.3].& Joe Belokopitsky [4:31.6]
prevailing at 10:40.13 over Syosset's 10:42.96.
The remainder of today's schedule consisted of "class" running
and field event relays, with one exception. the Pole Vault [not a relay],
and here for the first time in history a Rhode Island HSer went over
15-0 in the State of Rhode Island, as Brad Holtz [Barrington,RI]
continued his 15+ winning ways, by topping out at a Meet Record of 15-1.

Saratoga continues
list-leading surge
as Blood again circulates at Brown.
The Saratoga Springs Girls' team, honored as the #1 X-C team in the
USA, began their Indoor Season with many list-leading performances both
yesterday, and again today, beginning with the 800, where they went
1-2...with Caitlin Lane taking gold at 2:21.33 and teammate
Alysha McElroy the silver in 2:23.28.
Then came the Mile, and it was won by defender Lindsey Ferguson,
topping her own '03 MR with a 4:56.71, followed closely by Mary Liz
McCurdy [Bay Shore, NY] at 4:58.31, with 'Togan Karyn Delay
taking bronze at 5:06.06.
And where's {Nicole] BLOOD, asked many? Well, she finally
surfaced later in the meet, on the 'Toga 4x800m Relay, and followed
McElroy [2:22.6], Delay [2:21.8] with a 2:18.5, handing off to
Ferguson [2:17.8] for another "lap the field" gold at 9:20.69.
Finally, in the next to last event, the 3,000m, it was frosh
Hannah Davidson "lapping the field" by the bell, enroute
to a 9:54.27 gold by 49 seconds over second place. Needless to
add, it was quite a display of talent by the ladies from upstate New
York.
As for the local "wonder-kinder" from Westerly, RI, junior
Samantha Gawrych, she was confined to relay duties only, anchoring
the winning Sprint Medley [4:14.03] with an easy 2:14.3 - 800m
leg, followed later with a 59.5 anchoring the 4th place 4x400m Relay.
On the Boys side, the mile run deserves mention for it's competitive
nature. Brian Schmidt of Bishop Kellenberg [Uniondale,
NY] took it out to a 15m lead through the "half". With
three laps to go Geary Gubbins [Southampton, NY] caught and passed
Schmidt, with Thomas Webb [Barrington, RI] gamely hanging on
to third some 10m ahead of the chase pack. Geary continued on
for a 4:21.17 win, with Schmidt taking silver--4:22.72, and Webb bronze--4:24.13.
