1. York IL – York won the Niles West Sectional (3.0m, flat, windy and cold) with 32 points.  A slow early pace allowed the Dukes to pack it up front, as they had their top seven in the top twelve at the mile marker.  At the 1.5 mile mark number one man Sean McNamara pulled away from the field and eased in for the win, guiding his team a big win over very good competition.  Next week York travels to Peoria, Illinois, where they will get a chance to prove that they are the best team Illinois has ever seen.

2. Palatine IL – Palatine edged out a one point win over IL #5 Hersey 88-89 to take home their sectional title (3.0m, one hill repeated three times).  The horrible conditions (40+ mph winds and cold temperature) seemingly had an affect on this team.  Glenn Morris led the way for his squad, as he won the meet despite running with only one shoes for the last two miles of the race.  Palatine will need to step it up a notch if they hope to compete with York and earn themselves a state trophy next weekend.

3. Madison West WI – They won the Wisconsin State Meet with 71 points, placing their top five in a pack between spots 18-35.  It was most impressive, as they beat second place Arrowhead by nearly fifty points (120 points).  Madison West continued to show that they very well could be the second best team in the Midwest, as they ran incredibly strong on a cold and windy day (5k, rolling).

4. Novi MI – Carrying the momentum of the past few weeks, Novi headed into their regional with a lot of confidence.  Running in two man packs, they easily won the regional (5k, soggy and slow) scoring 31 points.  Novi won by 34 points over the second place team, state ranked Livonia Churchill.  They head to next week's state competition with a lot more to prove, but should be feeling very good about their chances to win.

6. Northridge IN – Matching up man for man with MW #8 Carmel, Northridge pulled ahead in the latter stages of the Indiana State Meet and won with 104 points.  Led by Braxton Fritz and Ken Collins, Northridge showed their dominance and why they were indeed ranked number one in Indiana heading into Saturday's meet.  This was a great weekend for this team and they should be very proud of such a fantastic season.

7. Milford MI -

8. Carmel IN – Carmel came out and raced strong but at the end of the day at the Indiana State Meet they finished second to MW #6 Northridge with 131 points.  Joel Shaw led his team up front and ran a fine race, while the pack ran very well with only a 22 second split between their 2-6 runners.  However, this was not enough, as Northridge simply had too much up front.

9. Cleveland St. Ignatius OH – Lost badly, taking sixth in their regional with 173 points, finishing two spots out of state qualifying.  It was simply not this team's day, as they finished their great season on a disappointing note.

10. Middletown OH – Led by a great team race, Middletown beat an incredibly strong field at their regional meet, beating previously ranked teams of LaSalle OH and St. Xavier OH.  Middletown took home the title with 86 points, beating second place LaSalle by ten points.  They were led by Jeff See, who won the race in 15:34.

Girls

1. Clarkston MI – They easily won their regional with 17 points, as they placed their top six in the first eight spots.  The dominance this team has shown this year is incredible.  They are undefeated and have won some key races.  They should be primed and ready to prove that they are the best team in the Midwest next weekend at their state meet.  Their 1-2 punch up front, along with their great pack, will be hard to match.

2. Bowling Green OH – Another weekend, another win, as Bowling Green continues to roll through the competition in Ohio.  On Saturday Bowling Green easily won their regional meet with 59 points.  They placed their top five in the top twenty spots and showed that they will be very tough to beat next weekend at the Ohio State Cross Country Meet.

3. Naperville North IL – Competing in the toughest sectional in the state (seven teams ranked in the top 15, only five advance to state), Naperville North showed just how good they are as they won the meet with 49 points.  The second place team, Hinsdale Central, was forty points back.  NN was led by the 1-2 combo of Shannon Phelan and Maggie DeBerge.  Both these girls have been running very well this season and are getting better each week.  The Illinois State Meet is next weekend, which will interesting to see how well they do.

4. Waukesha West WI – Waukesha West was the heavy favorite heading into Saturday's Wisconsin State Cross Country Meet (5k, rolling, windy and wet), and in the end WW did not disappoint.  Placing their top five all in the top 31 positions, West ran away from running Pulaski, winning their state meet with 59 points.  West won by a 34 point margin and showed that their depth is something few other teams can match.  This team should be proud of how well they did this season, as they ran strong all season long and now have a state championship to show for it.

5. Indianapolis Cathedral IN – A disappointing race by their number one girl and a great race by MW #10 Valparaiso meant that Cathedral would not be winning the state meet this season.  Cathedral, despite having a good team race, simply did not have the magic on the day and took third at the Indiana State Cross Country Meet (5k, rolling, windy and wet).

7. Goodrich MI – Goodrich easily won their regional and advanced to the state meet next weekend, as they scored only 33 points and scorched the competition.  Despite adverse conditions (very slippery and hilly 5k course), they still ran away from the field, as they placed their top five in the top ten spots.

8. Mason OH – Despite having their top two girls finishing in the top ten, Mason did not have what was needed to take home the team championship at their regional on Saturday (5k, warm, windy and wet).  Mason took third with 114 points, losing to MW #9 Colerain and unranked Mercy OH.  Mason will have their chance to shine once again next weekend, as they attend the Ohio State Cross Country Meet, and will face MW #2 Bowling Green and ranked Colerain for the title.

9. Cincinnati Colerain OH – Heavy winds of up to 50 mph could not slow down Colerain, as they won their regional with 73 points.  Going against most of the top teams in the state, including MW #8 Mason OH, Colerain used a mixture of great up front running and a nice pack to take home the team title.  Erin Ragouzis will lead this team next weekend, as they travel to the Ohio State Meet and will face off against MW #2 Bowling Green.

10. Valparaiso IN – Continuing their late season charge for a high ranking in the Midwest, Valparaiso stepped up big at the Indiana State Meet and won in grand fashion with 87 points.  This team always seems to be ready on the day, and this year they showed that they were the best team in the state, despite not being ranked as such for much of the season.  Led by Lauren and Amanda Hardesty, Valpo had too much up front to compete with, and ran incredibly well on a not so wonderful day (windy and wet).

Preview

1. York IL – York dominated their regional last weekend, placing their top seven in the top ten, which also hosted the #3 and #4 teams in the state.  This weekend York heads to their sectional in Skokie, Illinois, where they will again be tested but should come away with a victory.

2. Palatine IL – Last weekend Palatine sat out their number one man in order to find out who should be in their top seven this weekend and at state.  With their top guy back and everyone healthy, Palatine should be looking to roll away from the competition.

3. Madison West WI – The season is finally down to its last regular season meet for the Madison West crew.  All season long they have been running well, becoming a dominant force in Wisconsin.  This weekend they get to prove their lot in the state as they take on the best of the best in Wisconsin at the Wisconsin State Meet.

4. Novi MI – A huge weekend, where they beat previous MW #2 Milford MI and one of the top rated teams in Michigan in Pinckney, Novi has stepped it up and is really coming on when it counts most.  This weekend they head to regionals.

5. Dexter MI – A steady performer all season long, Dexter is hitting stride at the right time.  With all their hard work and dedication this season, they should hopefully breeze into state through their regional this weekend.

6. Northridge IN – This team has slowly but surely made believers of their team in Indiana, which capped off this past weekend with their first #1 ranking in state.  This weekend they will be put to the test, as they square off against the best in the state at the Indiana State Meet in Terra Haute.

7. Milford MI – A disappointing week, where they lost twice, can be easily forgotten with a big regional win.  Milford, who was ranked number two in the Midwest nearly all season, looks to have a better race this weekend then they did on Monday, where some of their guys simply had off days. 

8. Carmel IN – Carmel finds themselves back in the top ten rankings after winning their insanely talented semi-state last weekend, where they defeated previous MW#5 Lawrence North IN and previous MW #8 Hamilton Southeastern IN among others. 

9. St. Ignatius OH – Last week they easily beat the field at their district.  This week they face a tougher challenge at sectionals, but should still be able to make the state meet with ease.  They have been a top team in Ohio, especially the past few weeks. 

10. Middletown OH – Middletown was ranked in the top ten earlier in the season but then dropped out of the rankings after a couple weeks.  Now they are back and better than ever, as they are starting to hit their stride at the right time of the season.  They face a huge test this week at their sectional competition, where many of the top teams in the state meet will be competing.

Girls

1. Clarkston MI – Who can beat Clarkston this year?  They are undefeated and should remain that way after their state qualifying meet this weekend.  Clarkston has been running strong all season, and should be looking to qualify for state in grand fashion.

2. Bowling Green OH – They dominated the competition in their district last weekend and be looking to do so again at their big meet this weekend.  BG is prepping for the state, which comes a week from this Saturday.  Look for them to once again pack it up and run well.

3. Naperville North IL – Last weekend Naperville North was in the toughest regional in the state hands down.  This weekend they are in the toughest sectional in the state on the girls’ side.  Many of the top ranked girls’ teams in the state will be competition, looking to finish as close to North as possible.  North has demonstrated their mighty strength over every team this season and this weekend should be no exception.

4. Waukesha West WI – State here they come!  Waukesha West has been the deepest and most talented team in the state of Wisconsin all season.  This weekend they get to prove that they are hands down the best team in the state as they take on the rest of the top teams at the Wisconsin State Meet.

5. Indianapolis Cathedral IN – With a couple front runners and a solid pack behind them this team is set up for success as they head to the state meet this weekend in Indiana.  All season long this team has been led by two freshmen, so it will be interesting to see how well they respond under such high pressure on Saturday.

6. Rockford MI – Since their number one runner returned to action this team has been on a mission to prove they are the best in the state.  This weekend they get a chance to make a statement before state, as they head to their state qualifying round.

7. Goodrich MI – They have been dominant in their region this season.  This weekend they can once again prove that they are the best as they get ready to run their state meet in a week.  With a top frontrunner, a couple others that are right up there, and a very talented pack, this team can never be discounted.

8. Mason OH – The match up of the weekend is perhaps in Ohio this weekend.  Last weekend, Mason won their district meet in impressive fashion, but with little competition.  This weekend, they will be facing off against the rest of the top Cincinnati teams, which includes MW #9 Colerain and previously ranked St. Ursula among others. 

9. Cincinnati Colerain OH – With a big win last weekend in their district meet, Colerain will once again have to have a great meet if they hope to advance to state next weekend.  Since the return of one of their top runners from illness this team has been rolling and should produce even better results this weekend.

10. Valparaiso IN – Valparaiso was one of the best teams in the Midwest early on but slipped off the radar.  This past weekend they threw themselves back into the top ten with a very solid performance at their semi-state meet.  However, this weekend they will have to step it up another notch as they compete against MW #5 Indianapolis Cathedral and the other top Indiana teams at the Indiana State Meet.
