CIF LOS ANGELES CITY SECTION PRELIMINARIES
Highlights
Boys:
Coming off a fourth-place finish in the Mt. SAC Team Sweepstakes race, Belmont
(#4 CA Division I) cruised to an easy victory in Heat 2 with a controlled 81:30 run. The
Sentinels, known to take it easy in their less important meets, did not have their first
runner come in until the sixth spot. They are heavily favored to win the final meet for
the 14th time in 17 years.
The individual contest may be a little more intriguing. The top four contenders for the
finals were all in Heat 2. Andre Young, the winner of the race, has track
bests of 1:54.31, 4:19.24 and 9:30.52. He won the 800, 1600 and 3200 at the section finals
and made it past the preliminaries at State to qualify in all three events for the CIF
championships. Facing him will be Belmonts Humberto Vargas, who obviously gave far
less than his best effort today in a 13th place finish. Vargas was the section
cross country champion last spring as a sophomore and has looked good this year, winning
the Kenny Staub Invite and finishing 12th (15:44) at Mt. SAC. His teammate,
Henry Briseno, 6th today, got the better of him at Walnut (6th,
15:34) and has been on his heels all season. Edgar Flores of Garfield, 2nd in
the heat, was 19th in the State 3200 last spring.
Girls:
Defending champion, sophomore Natalie Stein of North Hollywood, a sixth
place finisher in the Mt. SAC Individual Sweepstakes race, settled for an easy
second-place finish in Heat 1 behind last years Section runner-up, Valerie Flores
(San Pedro). They are again expected to go 1-2 at Finals. Flores was a State qualifier in
the 1600 and 3200, and finished the season with PRs of 5:04.08 and 10:55.81.
Birmingham, the 1995 and 97 champions, toppled the field in that race,
scoring 34 points. Dina Melendez and Tiffany Burgess (section 1600 meter champ, 5:02.74)
finished 3rd and 5th for them.
Belmont and Palisades led Heat 2.
