New Hampshire HS MEET OF CHAMPIONS
Derryfield Park, Manchester NH

CR: 15:24, John Mortimer, Londonderry, 1994;

A pair of Class L Champions again ran to convincing wins a week later at the New Hampshire all-state Meet of Champions.

Brian Astell (Pinkerton, Derry) stopped the watch at 16:04, a second faster that his winning time the previous week to take the boy's gold medal. Nestled among a pack going into the mile, Astell pulled away over the duration of the race and added the stat
e meet crown to numerous other honors in the senior's rookie season. Kris Freeman, M/S champion from Sant Bani, was able to make up two seconds on the final half mile, but was still 8 seconds back at the tape.

Keene followed their Class L win with the state title (84), followed by surprising Class M/S winner Pelham, who scored the same as Pinkerton (99) but took runner-up on the tie-breaker.

For the girls, Class L champion Amy Rustin was one of the few top finishers who ran slower than her class meet race, but 19:08 was still a comfortable 8 seconds better than second place. Heading into the one mile at a stiff pace, the Nashua runner was ch
allenged only by Jill Laurendeau of Manchester Central. But over the next 2 loops, Laurendeau fell off the pace and Rustin cruised to the state title over the hilly course.

The silver medal went to a Central runner, but it was sophomore Codi Vachon, who outkicked Kaitlin Greg by a second in the final meters, Greg improving her best by almost 30 seconds on the course. Though Laurendeau faded to sixth, freshman teammate Liz G
esel was fifth, and that Little Green trio paced Manchester Central's team win with 50 points (only two of their top 6 are seniors). The top 5 team positions mirrored those of the previous week's Class L meet.

Finishing the scholastic season at this site will be the New Englands
(CT, ME, NH, RI, VT, no MA) on Sat November 14, where Central is two-time defending girls team champion.

(Top 6 Class L, Top 4 Class I and Class M/S from 10/31, + individuals)
(Top 6 will advance to New Englands)
