11/21/98 at Holmdel Park NJ New Jersey All GroupEd Grant's ReportFrom: Edward J. Grant [102416.1703@CompuServe.COM] Netters: Nate Miller of Highland Regional and Cate Guiney of Middletown South took the New Jersey all-group CC titles today on a chilly and breezy day at Holmdel County park. The team titles went to Christian Brothers Academy (4th in a row) and Middletown South (a first-time winner. The boys race was missing the pre-season favorite, Murad Campbell of Overbrook, who had dropped out of the Gr. IV race last week with a severe case of shin splints. He was thus ineligible for this race. Miller was rated only No. 3 going into the race, having lost in gr. IV last week to Jon Fasulo of Hunterdon Central (4th today). The race thus became a repeat of an early-season duel between Miller and Tim Styler of Cranford. In the earlier one, at the relatively flat warinanco park course in Elizabeth, Miller had leg coming into a final lap around the track, but Styler ran that 400 meters in 70 seconds to win going away. Miller led again this time, but had enough left at the finish to defeat Styler by 40 yards in 15:57. Styler ran 16;04 and Steve Roman of Monroe, in 3rd, clocked 16:09. It was a senior-dominated race, not surprising as this class had place a number of boys in the top 25 as sophs two years ago. Guiney completed a perfect season in NJ (she was 2nd in the Easterns at Van Cortlandt park) with a 100-yard margin over Erin Donohue of Haddonfield. Cate was off her fastest time of the season, running 18:06, but the windy conditions probably accounted for this. The surprise was the 6th-place finish of her twin Maggie, who only took up the sport this year. CBA had a much closer call than expected, defeating Cherokee, 55-66. The Colts were in good shape to score 40 points or less at the two-mile mark, but the back four of their six-man pack faded in the last mile and their team average of 16:48 was the slowest recorded in their five races at the park this year. Maggie Guineys finish was a big boost in what turned out to be a much easier win in the girls race, 85-123, over North Hunterdon. They were only 17 points apart in the Gr. III race last week. Ridgewood, the Gr. IV champ, could not get its pack close enough to the front to chalkenge seriously. Looking ahead to the Footlocker trials next Saturday at Van Cortlandt park, it would
seem that NJ has at least four serious challengers in the boys race in Miller,
Styler, Roman and Fasulo with a fifth possibility in Andres Cordero of Passaic Valley, 6th
today (Geoff Fahey, who led On the girls side, Guiney will be one of the favorites to qualify and Donohue
would be too, but will be on the basketyball court by then. Cheryl Bauer of Morris
Hills, 3rd today in 18:45, has an outside chance in what looks like a very strong field,
headed, of course, by defending New Jersey will have a good chance to sweep both state team titles at Van Cortlandt.
With eight boys under 16:20 today, seven of whom are almost sure to run, they will be
favored to repeat last years victory. The girls would be a lot stronger with
Donohue, but may pick up one BOYS GIRLS 1. Cate Guiney, Middletown South Sr. 18:06 Ed Grant |
