Subject: t-and-f: The "feud"

Netters:
        You may want an update on the feud referred to by Ryan in his post.
Campbell was good to his word, finishing ahead of Slattery in the race
today, though both qualified. Murad ran as he did in the NJ AG meet, from
the back and was not affected as much by the fast early pace. He was also a
lot more temperate in his after-race comments. He said that he ran next to
Slattery for a while and they were encouraging each other.
        The quotes were much talked about by NJ people on the field before
the race. The general opinion was that he better let his feet back them up
and they did. Murad is a very talented youngster who needs a little more
exposure to the wider world of track and field. Orlando could begin that
process. It's very rare for distance runners to get into such situations as
this: I used to kid Kristen hall of West Morris (and NC State) and
Christine Engel of Mt. Olive (and Clemson), four-year HS rivals and bosom
friends, that they might gain some attention for the sport by acting more
like people in other sports. They just smiled at the idea.
        Campbell's school incidentally, has a long heritage in the sport,
though it has been most recently been famed as the alma mater of discus
(and football) star Ron Dayne. Now called Overbrook, it began life just
before WW II as Lower Camden County regional (obviously, the change was for
headline purposes, though it sometimes causes confusion with Wilt
Chamberlain's alma mater). It have a pair of brothers, Gene and Tom Fekete,
who won five state CC individual titltes in six years (1948-54) in the old
NJ Gr. I-II-III race. But it doesn't do much traveling, being content with
the South Jersey schedule plus state meets.

        Campbell would probably be a first-rate 1600M/M man, but so far has
chosen the 3200M for his major efforts on the track. This may change this
indoor season. He could probably challenge 4:10 by outdoor season and would
have a good shot at the Penn 1500.
