Three of the four favorites won handily today at the 25th
anniversary New Jersey all-group cross-country championships at Holmdel
County Park. The weather wasn't bad, the temperatue in the high 40s under
gray skies with no rain, but the course was treacherous and a number of
runners tumbled to the turf , including some of the state's best.
Christian Brothers won a record third straight boys' team title
over Morristown, 73-104, with its winning margin coming as expected from
the 5th position (19-56). Five of the Colts' seven runners are
underclassmen, four of them sophomores, so it will be no surprise if the
string is extended to five by 1999.
Shawnee had a closer call in the girls' race, defeating Ridgewood,
99-112, with a 27-point edge in the last two slots, The Renegades had just
one senuior in its top five, so will also be a good bet to repeat in 1998.
Individually, Steve Slattery of Mt. Olive, a Footlocker finalist in
1996, repeated in the boys' race with a 30-yard margin over Murad Campbell
of Overbrook in 16:09. The girls' race provided the only upset when
Ridgewood soph Kelly behan finished 50 yards ahead of the field in 18:58,
while favored frosh Erin Donohue of Haddonfield could place only 10th, her
first loss of the season.
Slattery made his usual move at the 2M mark and quickly built a
30-yard lead over Jon Fasulo of Hunterdon central. campell, who had a bad
start, finally emerged from the pact and made his charge to 2nd just before
the final descent to the finishj line.
Donohue led the first mile of the girls' race in faster time than
she had a week ago in the Gr. I race. The two Ridgewood girls, Behan and
Celeste Sedo kepot the pressure on. Sedo fell twice in the bowl and managed
to salvage 7th, with Pam Meadows of Ocean Twp and Meghan Cunnff of
defending Red Bank Catholic, who made, the top 5 for the 4th year in a row,
finishing 2-3.
