degrees

The 1999 CCS Top 8 Invitational was a huge success as 177 marks improved
upon the CCS Top 25 list in the evening Classic.  As the season winds down
to "Finals" week and everyone prepares for the post season, the Top 8 got
things going in many events.  The absence of Silver Creek in the Boys
division opened the door for league rival Mt. Pleasant to show its' wares. 
The Steve Nelson-led Cardinals look to be a Championship contender with
balance in the jumps, hurdles and distances.  Eddie Alaniz appears to be
back as he assisted his team with a fine 1600 meter effort.  Ronnie Grant
was the male Track Athlete of the Meet with two hurdle wins, a 2nd in the
TJ and a member of the 2nd place 4 x 100 team.
    Los Altos was 2nd with 40 points and strong efforts from Hill in the
1600 (holding off Ozan), Bjorkland and Goins in the Shot and Discus and
Ware in the hurdles.  Bjorkland was male Field Athlete of the Meet.
    Del Mar, with 35 points, was 3rd with scoring from Ozan in the 1600,
with his searing 2:03 closing last half and negative-splitting the the 800
for a win; Mastin repeating as the HJ Champion and Jones tieing for 2nd in
the Vault.
  

   The ladies also enjoyed a good meet with a surprising Soquel squad
leading the scoring with Maggie Vessey winning the 400 and LJ, teammates
Connely and Ryan going 1-2 in the vault, and Thompson (300IH) and the 4 x
400 relay garnering 4th places.
   Alejandra Barrientos, SLV, was the female Track Athlete of the Meet and
Sulu Ruepenny was the female Field Athlete of the Meet. 
   Milpitas and Mt.Pleasant were tied at 37 with solid team efforts from
both.  Mt. Pleasant winning the 4 x 100, and scoring in the both hurdles,
the vault and triple jump.  Milpitas scoring in the
100-200-400-800-1600-high jump and 4 x 400 relay!
