Interesting event. Prelim action seemed to set up a
super final. Brendon Mahoney, the Atlanta prep hot off a 4:04 mile win
in the National Scholastic Outdoor with a 57.8 final 440, took Heat 1 at
1:52.91. Indiana prep Brett Tipton looked shockingly easy in racing
1:51.09 in winning Heat 2, with Missouri prep Stewart Kimball impressing
with improvement to 1:51.83 in third there. Stanford frosh Jon Stevens
1:51.67 edged sub-1:51 Ohio prep Rob Myers in Heat 3, with Chris Burns
(California prep) and Moses Washington (Oklahoman with 1:47.93 seasonal
best) tied at 1:52.55 in Heat 4 to both move on as winners. With the tie
in Heat 4 and winners plus the next times to total the eight finalists
moving on from the heats, 1:52.06 fourth placer Terrance McDowell from
Heat 2 and North Carolina's Zach Victor 1:52.18 had to sit on the
sidelines on Sunday.
The Finals was kind of strange. Moses Washington took
the first half lap out at under 25 seconds, with the field grouping up
at 53.9 for the 400. Stewart Kimball moved to the lead through the 600,
with Washington and Stevens edging past down the straightaway, with
Washington winning 1:50.79-1:51.04 over the Stanford frosh, who finished
second last year. |
