Pictures and commentary by Doug Speck
Oregon prep star Mariel Ettinger (La Grande HS) took
the early lead here with 72-2:28 and 3:44 before Sara Gorton (Mountain
Pointe HS, Phoenix, Az), Danielle Eckhartz (St. John's Univ), and
Victoria Chang (Punahou HS, Kailua, Hi) took over at the 1600 at 5:08.7.
At the 1600 mark Gorton pressed the pace, with Chang moving into second.
At 2000 meters (5 laps) Gorton was 6:25.6 and Chang 6:27.9. Gorton, a
member of the U.S. Junior team in the World Cross- Country championships
this past winter, continued to edge away, crossing the six lap point at
7:43.9 (Chang 7:50.1). Sarah was 8:22.4 with one lap to go, with 8:58.5
at the end of seven laps. Gorton finished at 9:36.29, the fastest prep
time of the year, with Chang 9:47.71 in second. After ten laps of
leading at the National Scholastic Meet the previous weekend over the
two mile and mile distance before suffering the withering last lap
finishers of others in the eighth circuit of the two and final lap of
the mile, it was nice to see the pleasant Arizonan Gorton win here in a
fine time. |
