The

Boys race Highlights: David Williams, the two time 6A state champ from 
Lawrence, hammered out a 64 front 400, 2:15 800, and low 4:40 mile trying to 
get away from Justin Hemphill. Hemphill is from Hesston, and a 4:15/1:54 type 
who swept last years 4A 800-1600-3200 at the state track meet. They were 
accompanied throughout the race by Tyson Edwards (Emporia), who with Williams 
took turns pushing the pace. In the final 200 over the Jim Ryun Skyline, 
Hemphill's speed proved decisive.   

Kearney (NE) piled five runners into the top 25 to easily defeat a strong 
40 team field from 5 states. Kearney average 16:49.5 for a five man average.

Girls race highlights: A stunning team battle saw Omaha Burke's pack runners 
come through to defeat front running power from SM East and Scottsbluff in a 
tremendously close battle. Burke placed 7-30-34-37-57 for 165, SM East 
6-14-43-44-59 for 166, and Scottsbluff 11-15-25-29-86 for 166 (East takes 
third on the pusher). Close behind was the Free State pack for 184. Burke 
averaged 21:03, SM East 20:59, Scottsbluff 20:59
Individually, Washburn Rural senior Cate Holston broke from the pack 
in the second mile to solo to a 19:15.9 victory. Amy Hasting (Leavenworth 
19:33), Trish Culbertson (Burlington 19:33), Megan Noonan (Baldwin 19:38), 
and Corrie Kristick (Cheyenne Mountain 19:38) followed in a pack.
