US#8 Ferris boys top US#2 Jackson in 4A
Shane Moskowitz sets 15:06 CR; US#25 Shadle Park girls over US#15 Glacier Peak in 3A
US#9 North Central boys score 3A 4-peat behind Ben Johnston's 15:16 win

The US#25 Shadle Park girls of Spokane confronting the US#15 Glacier Peak girls of Snohomish, just north of Seattle, in the 3A Girls race served as an undercard of sorts to the heavyweight 4A bout between the US#2 Henry Jackson boys of Everett, also north of Seattle, and the US#8 Joel Ferris boys of, yes—Spokane.  West versus East…Seattle versus Spokane…these are storylines which run deep in Washington harrier history - Dave Devine Meet Story

Shane Moskowitz threw down a 15:06 CR in the boys 4A race, while US#8 Ferris turned back US#2 Henry Jackson in the team competition.  In the girls 3A race, Amy-Eloise Neale (500) got the individual win, but US#25 Shadle Park topped Neale's US#15 Glacier Peak team, 59-67.

Class 4A Highlights
  • In their first matchup of the season, US#2 Henry Jackson was taken down by US#8 Joel Ferris, 68-100, with Ferris #1 Adam Thorne leading the way with his 15:31 third place showing and the team producing a 34-second spread from 1-5.  It marked the 22nd straight year a team from the Greater Spokane League has won the large school state title.
  • After being outkicked for the 4A title in 2008, Central Kitsap senior Shane Moskowitz returned with a vengeance in '09, blazing a 15:06 course record to top the field and Adam Tenforde's 1998 course best of 15:10.  Gig Harbor senior Conner Peloquin charged gamely home for runner-up honors in 15:22.
  • The US#36 Eastlake girls defended the title they won in 2008 with a similar pack approach, as first finisher Chelea Orr crossed 15th in 19:00, but their top 5 was only separated by 45 seconds as they scored 100 points to turn back Tahoma's 124.
  • Garfield senior Anna Dailey became one of the top female preps to traverse Sun Willows since the distance was increased to 5k, as her 17:58 victory left her behind only Megan O'Reilly (17:35-2005) and Brie Felnagle (17:53-2004) on the all-time course list.
Class 3A Highlights
  • Glacier Peak ninth grader Amy-Eloise Neale prevailed in a freshman stretch battle, as she and North Central 9th grader Katie Knight came off the last turn shoulder to shoulder for a torrid finish which Neale took, 18:09 to 18:09.  Neale's 1-point starter, however, wasn't enough to propel her US#15 Glacier Peak team to the top of the podium, as the US#25 Shadle Park girls defeated them, 59-67, behind a 4-5 finish from senior Andrea Nelson (18:37) and freshman Kendra Weitz (18:38).
  • North Central senior Ben Johnston claimed the boys individual title with the second fastest time of the day, running 15:15 (#3 all-time) to turn back Seattle Prep senior Drew O'Donoghue-McDonald's 15:20 effort.  Johnston's win fronted a strong day by the US#9 North Central boys, who placed 3 in the top 5 to fuel a 47-point effort and claim their fourth-straight 3A title.
Class 2A Highlights
  • Sehome junior Scott Carlyle took the boys individual crown in 15:47, but his defending champ Sehome squad was upended by '08 runners-up Burlington-Edison, 57-85, with B-E's Tyler Williams leading the way with a third place, 16:01 effort.
  • The Kingston sister combo of senior Ruby Roberts (18:06) and freshman Marina Roberts (18:38) went 1-2, but their slim 3-point opener wasn't enough to overcome the 1:09 spread of 3-time defending champs Sehome, who secured their 4th-straight title with a 57-59 win over Kingston.
Class 1A Highlights
  • While Port Townsend junior teammates Bereket Piatt (16:10) and Habtamu Rubio (16:23) managed to claim the first two spots in the boys race, Nooksack Valley's Oliver Bear Don't Walk led his team to the top of the podium over Port Townsend, 99-111, with his 4th-place, 16:38 finish.
  • The girls race also saw a pair of teammates sweep the first two places, as Northwest soph Maddie Meyers successfully defended her '08 title with an 18:01 clocking (second fastest of the day), and freshman teammate Eliza Rice was next home in 19:37.  Three-time defending champs King's made it four in a row with an 83-110 victory over La Center.
Class B/2B Highlights
  • Northwest Christian-Lacey swept the B division with 83 points on the boys side behind individual winner Lucas Graham (16:25), and a remarkable 28 points on the girls side, featuring all 5 scorers in the top 11 behind 3rd-placer Elizabeth Weber (19:41).
  • Colfax sophomore Morgan Wilson scorched the girls field by almost 50 seconds with her 18:36 clocking for the individual title
