Highlights - from Dave Devine, NW Regional Editor

Boys
  • Expected to be one of the closest team races of the day, the boys 5A race didn't disappoint, with top contenders Twin Falls and Boise High separated by a mere 3 points, 76-79. In the end, Twin Falls pack running between places 10 to 30, where they crammed all five scorers, overcame Boise's three in the top ten and individual winner Eric Fitzpatrick's great run up front. Pre-race co-favorite Mt. View was farther back in third with 103 points.
  • Fitzpatrick's 16:05 was the fastest boys' time on the day and the first state title for the precocious Boise soph.
  • Following in the footsteps of graduated Century star Chio Lopez, Century senior Aaron Jenkins took the 4A individual title, running 16:31 to turn back Burley junior David Fillmore (16:43).
  • Making up slightly for the fact that the favored Preston girls were edged in their 4A title race, the Preston boys locked up the 4A team trophy with a 66-86 victory over Hillcrest. Preston was led by Rusty Johnson (6th - 17:07) and Dacoda Elison (8th - 17:14), and managed to get all of their scorers in the top 20.
  • Nearly as dominant as their girls' team, the Bear Lake boys scored a low 35 points in the 3A team race behind the 2-3 finish of Ryan Golding (17:16) and Tanner Saxton (17:17) to defend their '06 state title. They had 5 in the top 15 to easily outdistance Kimberly HS, runners-up with 90 points, and only 2 clear of third placers Declo High (92 pts).
  • Declo's Matt Jones was the 3A individual winner in 16:46, 30 seconds up on the rest of the field
  • In the latest battle between 2A powers Firth and Soda Springs, Firth came away with the 66-86 victory, managing five in before Soda's fourth.
  • Challis senior Zeke Wilson closed out an impressive season in the small school ranks with a 16:41 2A individual win over Oakley junior Ryan Kingsland (16:55).

Girls
  • Borah junior Nicole Nielsen hadn't lost a race all season, with major invite victories at Bob Firman, Tiger Grizz and the Puma Classic in OR, but that streak came to an end in the 5A state race, when upset-minded frosh Kinsey Gomez from Couer d' Alene gapped Nielsen by 7 seconds to win 17:56 - 18:03.
  • In the 5A team competition, NW#4 Boise girls upheld their ranking with a 59-97 victory over Eagle, keyed by three top-10 performances from Sarah Olson (6th - 19:01), Anne Lovelace (7th - 19:06) and Kate Jamboretz (9th - 19:21).
  • Four-time defending 4A champ Bishop Kelly made it "one for the thumb" with a slim 38-40 victory over a Preston team many thought was poised to win its first state title since moving up to 4A.
  • Junior Megan Barlett of Sandpoint took the 4A individual title by a large margin, running 18:29 to end up well clear of runner-up Kaylee Campbell (Preston jr, 18:56).
  • The smaller school races featured two clinics in pack running, with 3A power Bear Lake placing 6 in the top 10 to decimate the field with 23 points behind individual winner Cydney Jacobsen (19:21), only to be outdone by Soda Springs in the 2A race, which wedged their entire scoring seven into the top ten, also dropping 23 points and led by individual winner Bailee Siepert (20:03).
