By Dave Devine, Dyestat NW Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS

1. Crater OR—
The Comets, reassembling their full varsity contingent after several weeks of split-squad racing, ran away with the Southern Sky District meet, scoring 26 points to runner-up Ashland’s 41. Crater put six in the top ten, led by Zach Elliot’s 16:11 winner. The split from 1-5 was a close 48-seconds, and that was with Ryan Santana, who led the team at their Bob Firman breakthrough, running as sixth man at 17:00.

2. North Central WA—
As expected, North Central came away from the Washington 3A Eastern Regional with a comfortable win in anticipation of the 3A state meet next weekend. Their 23 points came on 1-4-5-6-7 scoring, behind individual winner Andrew Kimpel’s 15:52. NC’s entire top seven was inside the first eleven spots, with a 1-6 compression of merely 31-seconds (#2 to #5 =16 seconds!).

Central Catholic's trailing pack of Musa Ahmed, Joel Turkheimer, Austin Jones, Samot Turina and Peter Slauson all squeezed within 20 seconds of each other, from 16:20.4 to 16:40.8, with a top 5 spread of 29 seconds.

4. Mead WA—
5. Central Valley WA—

Mead took care of business at the 4A Eastern qualifier, following front-runner Kelly Lynch’s 15:57 runner-up finish to a winning score of 62, well clear of Eisenhower’s 83 and Spokane rival Central Valley’s 99. Like many of the teams ranked ahead, Mead is whittling down that pack compression, narrowed to 43 seconds from 1-5 at the Eastern Regional. Central Valley was upset by an Eisenhower team that’s been considered a NW bubble squad this season, but the Bears were without their typical #2 man, Bryce Aguilar, sidelined with an injury that may keep him from running the state meet as well. With Aguilar in the lineup, CV is closer to challenging Mead, but minus his contributions, they sacrifice too many points up front to beat either the Panthers or the talented Eisenhower unit. All three teams advance to the state meet next weekend.

6. Jesuit OR—
Two weeks ago, Jesuit was beaten handily by Central Catholic at the Adidas Classic, but the team heading into the state meet rematch this coming weekend will look slightly different.  Most importantly, #1 runner Brian Manning, who had been ailing the last few weeks, appears back to form after a Metro League District meet in which he led four of his teammates into the top ten and dropped a 15:38 winning time. Including several JV runners with varsity-level times, Jesuit had 7 at or under 16:21, and ten at or under 16:30, both all time district meet records for Jesuit, toppling the marks set by the 2004 team that placed 6th at the inaugural NTN.

7. Seattle Prep WA—
Seattle Prep, with their eyes on a 3A state showdown with North Central, cruised into that meet next weekend with a 60-74 district win over Bellevue. Pack running continues to be the bread and butter of this squad, with five scorers crossing within 22 seconds of each other, led by soph Drew O’Donoghue-McDonald’s 16:25. Erik Berg, #2-man a week ago, didn’t run the district meet due to injury.

9. Gig Harbor WA—
The Tides waged a back and forth battle with NW Bubble team Tahoma at the Westside Classic state qualifier, forging a one-point win in the 60-61 contest. Gig Harbor was fronted, as they have been all season, by state favorite Miles Unterreiner in 15:14. Tahoma’s Jono Lafler wasn’t far behind, and from there the race was ultra close. Gig’s 2-5 runners were a tight 37-seconds apart, which was just enough to turn back a challenge that will surely play itself out again at the state meet next weekend.

10. Lake Stevens WA—
NW Bubble Snohomish boys placed a trio in the top ten of the District 1 Championship to reverse last week’s loss to NW#10 Lake Stevens, beating the Vikings 64-73. Lake Stevens looked great up front, with three in the top ten led by Joey Bywater’s 15:40 third place finish, but their fifth man was in 40th, well after Snohomish had crossed all seven runners.

GIRLS

1. Jesuit OR—
The Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation course record took a beating as the Crusaders prepped for the Oregon 6A meet with a resounding victory at their Metro League district race.  Adrienne McGuirk slashed 28 seconds off the CR with her 17:36, and #2 Noelle VanRysselberghe was also under the old mark (18:04) with her 18:00 finish. Jesuit had six girls at 18:51 or better, easily the best pack performance in Metro league history. With only 18 points and their entire seven in the top ten, this is a team poised for the state meet and beyond.

3. St. Mary’s OR—
On a wet and muddy Centennial HS course, St. Mary’s scored 34 points to take their sixth straight Mount Hood Conference title. Placing 4-5-6-7-12, with #1 runner Alexandra Jones out due to a sore knee that won’t keep her from the state meet next weekend, the Blues are ready to take their cohesive pack down to Eugene and a showdown with an extremely formidable Jesuit squad.

4. Boise ID—
In the Idaho 5A state meet, the Boise girls upheld their ranking and their preeminence within Idaho by authoring a 59-97 victory over Eagle HS. The win was keyed by three top-10 performances from Sarah Olson (6th - 19:01), Anne Lovelace (7th - 19:06) and Kate Jamboretz (9th - 19:21), and featured the return of Jacque Sahlberg, who’d been competing in the post-season with Boise’s soccer team. Sahlberg was fifth runner here, but is normally higher in the lineup, and will surely be more race-ready as the Braves head toward a hometown appearance in the NTN NW Regional.

5. Newport WA—
An unranked and largely unheralded squad from Lakeside, led by a pair of top 5 finishers, upset Newport, 53-55, at the District 2 Championships. Newport was well-represented in the top ten, with Emily Albrecht 4th, Jillian Altizer 6th, and Natty Plunket 7th, but Lakeside managed to insert enough scorers between that top three and the next two (18th and 24th) to knock off a team that had themselves been off the radar until their great run at Nike Pre-Nationals a few weeks back.

Senior Ellie Bonner led her Snohomish teammates with a first place finish (18:40) in the District 1 4A race, fronting the squad to the team title with 61 points over Marysville-Pilchuck’s 98. The compression from 1-5 is 1:37, but allowing for Bonner’s out-there performance, their spread from #2-#5 is a more compact 54 seconds, and the team averages a solid 19:31.

9. Redmond WA—

For the third week in a row, Eastlake and Redmond went head-to-head, and for the third meet, Eastlake edged out Redmond, this time for the 4A District 2/4 Championship. In a near replay of their matchup the week before, Eastlake had to overcome the Redmond dynamic duo of Devin McMahon (1st - 18:16) and Sarah Lord (3rd - 18:31), both crossing before any of the Eastlake runners. But in a display of pack tactics, Eastlake used a 66-second spread behind 4th place Chelsea Orr to jam all five scorers in before Redmond’s third runner, and prevail 53-59.
