DyeStat XC Region Review NW
Summary of Northwest Top Ten, Week Ending Nov. 3, 2007
By Dave Devine, Dyestat NW Regional Editor
Boys - Girls
Note: We have eschewed the standard “Up Next” listing for each team, as they are almost all planning to race the NTN NW Regional in Boise ID 11/10 for their next competition.
BOYS
1. Crater OR— NW#1 Crater needed everything in it's arsenal to turn back a determined Hermiston squad which nearly pulled the biggest upset of the Oregon state meet, finishing within 2 points of the #5-ranked team in the country, 52-54. The two teams traded placings throughout the top 25, with Crater led by the 6th place finish of Zach Elliott (16:16) and Hermiston fronted by the 3rd place effort of Jordan Ringe (16:00). Crater’s 1-5 split of 48-seconds probably saved the day, as Hermiston had to dig a bit farther back to their 5th man.

2. North Central WA— 6. Seattle Prep WA— North Central's Andrew Kimpel led his team to a 36-110 victory over Seattle Prep in the WA 3A state meet, grabbing a runner-up finish to Ryan Prentice in 16:05. The rest of the NC squad was close behind, using a 49-second spread and 16:25 average to easily turn back a SP team that had hopes of scoring a major upset. Prep’s 36-second 1-5 compression was both impressive and in keeping with their season-long focus on pack-running, but they lacked the up-front firepower to take down an NC juggernaut which heads to Boise at least a co-favorite (with Central Catholic) for the regional win.

3. Central Catholic OR— 5. Jesuit OR— NW#3 Central Catholic, with five runners inside the top ten scoring positions, secured their third-straight large school title, and their second 6A title in a row at the expense of cross-town rival NW#5 Jesuit, 32-67. Defending individual champ Taylor Morgan led the Rams with his 15:49 runner-up finish, leading a stream of black singlets across the line into the top 15. Jesuit was fronted by a valiant run from rebounding Brian Manning, 4th in 16:00, and Peter Maag (6th in 16:05). Third place in the team race was Grant High, with 147 points to edge out South Eugene's 150 for fourth. Central Catholic, with five at or under 16:15, would have placed their entire scoring 5 in front of Crater’s first runner in the 5A race.

4. Mead WA— 8. Eisenhower WA— 9. Central Valley WA— 10. Gig Harbor WA— Gig Harbor senior Miles Unterreiner ran the fastest time of the day at the WA state meet, his 15:39 nearly leading his team to victory over NW#4 Mead, before Mead’s fifth runner, Jordan Baker, sealed the deal to prevail 108-112. NW Bubble team Tahoma finished 3rd with 128 points, beating NW#9 Central Valley (4th with 140) in the process. CV’s normal #2, Bryce Aguilar, ran injured and finished as their seventh man, but even if he’d been right with their #1, Jayson Taylor, it may not have made up the difference on Mead and Gig. Jackson and NW Bubble Lake Stevens scored 166 to tie for 5th, with Jackson's fifth runner putting them ahead. Redmond secured a 7th place finish with 178 points, defeating NW#8 Eisenhower (187) and NW Bubble Snohomish (194) in the process.

7. Kodiak AK— Regular season concluded in September with Alaska state meet title.
GIRLS
1. Jesuit OR— 3. St. Mary’s OR— The season-long NW#1 Jesuit girls proved the soundness of that ranking with a 35-point performance to take their sixth-straight large school title. Placing their top five inside the top 12 scoring positions, Jesuit soared away from NW#3 St. Mary's Academy (63 pts), who managed three in before Jesuit's third, but couldn't compete with the 4-5 depth of the Crusaders. Getting up for third was South Eugene with 139 points. Race runner-up Adrienne McGuirk edged out teammate Noelle VanRysselberghe, 18:19 - 18:21, to lead Jesuit to the title.
A classification below, no team peformance, boys' or girls', was more impressive than the pack-running clinic Crater put on en route to the 5A girls state team title. Scoring an all-time Oregon low of 16 points, Crater placed their entire top five in the first eight slots, and took scoring positions 1-2-3-4-6 when individual qualifiers were removed. Only a last-second pass in the final meters of the race kept Crater from a perfect 15 score.
