2nd Annual Lincoln Invitational and Relays

Friday the 13th was the best day Lincoln High School coach and meet director Charlotte Richardson could find to schedule the 2nd annual Relay and Invitational this year. And sure enough, at least one team called in early to scratch, and a few would only send throwers or jumpers. No big deal. The meet must go on.

A few races were run uncontested, and many of the athletes wished they faced some stiffer competition. But that’s just the way of high school meets, and the 2nd Annual Lincoln Invitational and Relay was no exception. Even without the teeming competition that was hoped for, some good times were posted as the lights came on at Lincoln HS on the evening of Friday the 13th.

Elvis Akpla triple jumped his way to a half-inch PR from last weekend and a state-leading mark of 47-1.5. His goal? State. And with a margin increased over 6 inches from last year’s outdoor season, he just might. “I was mediocre [last year],” says Akpla with a smile. “And then I grew.”

Both boys and girls Distance Medley relays brought the win home in the last leg. The girls race was neck-and-neck pack running until Lincoln Girls anchor and middle distance star Marsha Lampi took the baton. With 800m to go Lampi began a smooth assault on the gap between South Eugene’s Whitney Pitney, finishing over 23 seconds in front of Pitney.

The Boys DMR was won by a great run of the 1600, by Franklin’s anchor Bryce Burgess, who brought his team from 4th place at the bell lap to overcome South Eugene A, B, and Lincoln.

“Stick with the kick,” said Burgess of his strategy. His Franklin teammates were ecstatic. “We’re tiny, but we’re #1.”

Other athletes of note were Lincoln sr Megan Perra, who anchored the winning 4x400 and was the only sub-minute girls 400m runner, winning in 59.30; Tresa “T” Palmer, Lincoln jr and G-HJ winner, gracefully blasted through 4-8, 4-10, and 5-00 on her first tries, then gamely shot for 5-01 with a smile on her face despite the cold rain and a slight wind. Palmer also ran the 400m and 4x400 relay for Lincoln; and Catlin Gabel’s Madeleine Miller, who doubled with 37-02 Triple Jump and 15.19 100H wins.

The closest race of the meet was the boys 110 meter hurdles, won by Catlin Gabel’s Cody Snell. “It felt like my best time this year,” said Cody, whose 16.50 win was just six-hundredths over Lincoln’s 2nd and 3rd place finishers Austin Parr (16.56) and Danzell Bates in (16.62).
