  athlete quotes

Elijah Greer - Winner 6A Boys 1500

“I heard the first 300 was 51, and that’s when I decided it was too slow. No one really took the lead, and my coach said if you’re feeling good, go for it at the 800 mark. I heard the crowd yelling, and I figured I better give it my all and take it right there. I’m not sure how fast my last 800 was, but it was probably faster than some of the prelims for the 800. I don’t know if I would’ve been able to [win the 1500] if I ran the 800 too.”

On fellow soph and runner-up Nathan Mathabane: “My second coach is [Ugandan Olympian and Nike athlete] Julius Achon, and Nathan and I train together with him sometimes on the weekends. It’s not going to get any easier next year, it’s always going to be a fight. Nathan’s definitely a very talented athlete. I’m glad he’s there though, because we can help each other along.”

Jordan Aldredge - Winner 4A Boys Shot Put, Discus, Javelin and 3rd in 100

On the quick transition from the 100 to the Javelin: “I warmed up for javelin, got in my two practice throws...I was kind of nervous about being in the right place so I didn’t get disqualified for the 100. I went over the 100 [starting line], ran a race, got third, ran around to the javelin runway, put my socks on backwards and pulled on my javelin shoes. My first throw was actually 185, and then they brought my jav back and it was consecutive throws—I was getting tired by then, but the next throw was 197-07, and that’s an 11-foot PR. I threw it, and I felt a really strong left plant, and I came over top of it, and it was just gone. I was pretty excited, seeing it in the air. The 100 might have helped me warm up and get the blood flowing.”

Bianca Mathabane - Winner 6A Girls 100 & 300 hurdles

On winning the 6A girls team title: “I’m so glad I get to close out my year with this [team title], it’s amazing. Lincoln’s going to be such a strong team, even after I’m gone. The state meet is no joke—tensions rise—and the younger girls have been doing so well, like they’ve been doing this their whole lives. I’m really proud of them.”

“Today was kind of a falling-apart day, body-wise. Before the 300 hurdles, my groin was really bothering me, and I knew it was going to hurt really bad, but I said I’m just going to do this anyway. I’m going to give it my all, this is my last race of the day, I have to do this. I think, as long as I push through something and don’t think about it, I will do the best I’m capable of doing with my body right then.”

“It’s really sad to be moving on. This has been my life for four years. I have so many memories here.”

Ryan Bailey - Winner 6A Boys 100 and 200

“It was crazy, I was trying to go even faster. I wasn’t even thinking, I was just running.”

“I felt strong. I knew it was going to be a good time. These have been the best couple of days of my life. It's been great.”

Kellie Schueler - Winner 5A 100, 200, 400 and 4x100 Relay

“[The pressure] wasn’t really that bad. I’ve been running since I was little, and I’ve been to meets here before—the XO Invite and the Hershey Games—so I’m kind of used to it. But it’s different when you have a team you’re running for, trying to get points.”

Regarding teammate Kourtney Parks, 2nd to Schueler in both the 200 and the 400: “We’re pretty laid back in practice. We have our group that we run with and we all just push each other. Even if she were to beat me, I would be so happy for her. I know she’s been working so hard for it.”

Taylor Morgan - Winner 6A Boys 800

“I was just trying to power through the wind off the backstretch. [The race was] not quite as fast as last year, but I still felt good about it.”

“I had to stop running for about two weeks to take care of some things—my school work, getting enough sleep—so it feels really good to come through and get one of my goals. It’s been tough to get back out there and get back in that routine again, but it was really worth it.”
