Thanks watchout. Yes Gig's 1-3 times obviously were superior and more telling at Firman but obviously Hammer and Moussa ran better at Danner/Nike based on your conversion to Sun Willows (well Hammer big time and perhaps Moussa).

Hammer, yes. Moussa ran slower (based on my conversions).

Charlie Sheilds ran faster at Danner than Bob Firman as well, though, but he was even better at Sundodger and is likely to be one of the #6-10 runners in the end (so maybe on varsity, but not likely to be a scorer by the look of it). As SteveU suggested (and Doug Binder's recap implied), they probably ran as a group with their #5 (Hammer) to push him to a better time. And it seemed to work, since he ran about 7 seconds faster than he did last week (based on my conversions).

Here's the Sun Willows equivalents that Gig Harbor's top 9 have run through their first three meets (this meet and Sundodger were controlled efforts):

Sundodger - Bob Firman - Nike Pre-Nationals

1 Wolfgang Beck: 15:34.96 - 14:53.17 - 15:52.47

2 Logan Carroll: 15:35.08 - 15:15.52 - 15:52.38

3 Tristan Peloquin: 15:35.04 - 15:22.06 - 15:52.98

4 Mahmoud Moussa: 15:34.85 - 15:43.43 - 15:53.12

5 Michael Hammer: DNS - 15:59.53 - 15:52.30

6 Charlie Shields: 16:49.77 - 17:12.62 - 17:06.26

7 Jack Shields: 16:52.87 - 17:21.99 - ??? (didn't look at sub-Danner yet)

8 Jordan Oldenburg: DNS - DNS - 16:56.34

9 Ryan Gregory: 17:31.23 - 17:29.40 - ??? (didn't look at sub-Danner yet)

Of course, conversions are never going to be perfect, but the rough idea applies: The top 4 didn't push it this week, and about all you can take from this is that Michael Hammer ran a little better this week when he had his teammates around him pushing him on.
"870330":

8-day total is at 1.17 and only the Danner Championship races are left (first is going on right now, I think).

Looks like the efforts by Nike to keep the course in better condition has paid off - initial estimate is that times are running about 20-30 seconds faster than NXN 2007, which had very similar rainfall leading up to the race.
"868675":
Maybe. But for whatever reason, when I was researching this over the summer (in reviewing past NXN ratings), it seemed like the 8 days leading up to the meet had by far the strongest correlation. December races have a month plus of solid rain, completely saturating the ground and making drainage near impossible, whereas this weekend might be mostly surface muck after just one bad week or so.

Too bad the championship races aren't first thing in the morning, though. Six hours of stampeding might make the course a mess, regardless.

Good preview. It should be a fun day. I am curious what the course conditions are going to be like. I'm not expecting anything like December, but with a wet last week or two, and rain predicted for tomorrow, I'm assuming the course conditions are going to be worse than typical for this meet. I guess we'll find out what it looks like out there Saturday morning.

Though probably not as bad as NXN 2012, I think it's safe to assume this is going to be NXN type conditions. Over the last week, and adding what's expected today and tonight, you're talking about 1.5-2.5 inches of rain. Lucky this meet isn't on Sunday or Monday, because it would be even worse then (storm supposed to get the worse and worse with 2.5-3.5 inches by Monday).

Guess we'll get an early preview as to how effective Nike's new measures are going to be to maintain better course conditions...

EDIT: Assuming the best, the rainfall profile is closest to 2010... a reminder of how that race went, here's the top 10's:

1 Lukas Verzbicas 11 Midwest-1 15:59.2

2 Edward Cheserek 13 Northeast-2 16:01.5

3 Craig Lutz 11 Highland Village 16:04.4

4 Ammar Moussa 11 Arcadia XC Club 16:16.3

5 Spencer Wenck 11 Southwest-1 16:19.8

6 Lane Werley 11 California-3 16:24.3

7 Ryan Urie 11 California-4 16:28.2

8 Brian Gohlke 11 South-1 16:28.8

9 Tony Somaragiewicz 12 Heartland-1 16:29.9

10 Kenji Bierig 11 Central Spokane 16:30.5

1 Rachel Johnson 11 South-1 18:18.6

2 Christie Rutledge 12 Manlius XC Club 18:21.4

3 Amy-Eloise Neale 13 Northwest-2 18:48.8

4 Katie Sischo 12 Manlius XC Club 18:49.7

5 Haley Pierce 12 Wilmington XC Club 18:50.4

6 Jillian Fanning 13 Manlius XC Club 18:51.7

7 Shaylyn Tuite 11 New York-3 18:52.1

8 Katie Knight 13 Northwest-1 18:53.3

9 Caroline Hardin 14 Bozeman XC Club 18:53.5

10 Brittany Winslow 11 New York-1 18:54.2

8-day rainfall measurements leading up to NXN the past few years:

2012 = 2.19 inches

2011 = 0.61 inches

2010 = 1.35 inches

2009 = 0.23 inches

2008 = 0.29 inches

2007 = 1.19 inches

which would suggest it'll be as sloppy as 2010 at best, though possibly as bad as 2012. If Nike's new measures end up alleviating 20%, it might end up closer to 2007 (and so the boys winning time might be as good as the 15:50-16:20 range tomorrow) or, at worst, slightly better than 2012.
"868088":
Good preview.
