\n
\nI guess I had never taken a close look at the 5A numbers until just now, but I had no idea that Bend and Summit have been allowed to opt down. At 1397 and 1281 students, respectively, they are both above the 1257 enrollment cutoff for 5A.

\nI find this odd, when Forest Grove and West Albany are nearly as far apart as Bend\/Summit are from the Salem and Eugene schools (2+ hrs vs 2.5 hrs). I'm sure [mountain] travel safety is one of the considerations, but that argument fell on deaf ears with the original 6A reclassification placing Redmond in with the Salem schools.

\nI think it makes it faster on average, given how muddy it got around the track bowl in previous years. By the end of the 6A races, it wasn't unusual to sink into 6" of mud. Maybe it's a bit of an equalizer: slower in dry years (more energy expenditure), and faster in wet years.

\nI did some research...
\n
\nPlugging those times into the 6A meet (or previous 4A) ... Union would have WON the large-school state titles in 1997 and 2001.
\n
\nWith those five times, Union would also have placed second in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2008. Most of those years Union would have been quite competitive with Jesuit through four but then outmatched at 5. 21 minutes is worth about 50 points on average.

\n
\nIf the state meet was any indication, I think the Oregon boys have a chance to challenge the Washington boys at Borderclash. I think the Washington girls are pulling away though (the SW Washington girls alone are about on par with the top 20 times at the Oregon State Meet).
\n
\nVery quick scoring, looking at only last weekend's meets:
\n
\nBoys = Oregon 26, Washington 29
\n1. Matthew Maton (OR)
\n2. John Dressel (WA)
\n3. Kyle Thompson (OR)
\n4. Tanner Anderson (WA)
\n5. Reilly Bloomer (OR)
\n6. Kai Wilmot (WA)
\n7. Mitchell Butler (OR)
\n8. Nicholas Hauger (WA)
\n9. Michael Williams (WA)
\n10. Mack Marbas (OR)
\n
\nGirls = Washington 22, Oregon 39
\n1. Alexa Efraimson (WA)
\n2. Hannah Gindlesperger (OR)
\n3. Ella Donaghu (OR)
\n4. Lindsey Bradley (WA)
\n5. Alexis Fuller (WA)
\n6. RaynJoy Norton (WA)
\n7. Alissa Pudlitzke (WA)
\n8. Andrea Masterson (WA)
\n9. Nicole Goecke (WA)
\n10. Sara Tsai (OR)
\n11. Gracie Tostenson (OR)
\n12. Shaylen Crook (OR)
\n
\nthe Suislaw duo and Reilly Bloomer have to duplicate their great races, though. And I think several of the Washington boys can run quite a bit faster than they did at their district meets which should swing a few points in Washington's favor (such as Gig Harbor's quartet challenging the above top 10, and Beck possibly top 5; also the Seattle kids like Joe Hardy, of course, and probably some of the 2A guys like Devon Grove ... but just Hardy alone, if he were to finish a conservative fifth, that would swing it to 27-29 in Washington's favor, with the added depth of other athletes running harder than they did at Districts would probably make the score more like 26-33).","date_added":"Nov 5th 2013, 4:26am","nest":0,"liked":false,"member":[],"can_delete":false,"item_id":193412,"item_type":"news","pb_image":"\/\/www.runnerspace.com\/forum\/uploads\/av-43715.jpg","pb_title":"watchout","pb_url":"profile.php?member_id=43715","pb_url_dns":"https:\/\/www.runnerspace.com\/profile.php?member_id=43715","pb_wally_id":"1073498"},"905233":{"pb_id":"9184","pb_type":"members","likes":"0","parent_id":"0","pid":"905233","comment_id":"905233","member_id":"9184","comment":"
