\nIt’s starting to feel like every cross country season is special in Washington, but Saturday’s state meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco just might take the cake.
\n
\nOn a marquee that includes the US#1 Gig Harbor boys, US#2 Alexa Efraimson and US# Joe Hardy – for starters – just who will come away making the biggest headline?
\n
\nEfraimson, a junior at Camas, could take aim at Amy-Eloise Neal’s 2012 course record 17:10.
\n
\nAnd the boys 5K course record of 14:58 by Kamiakin’s Anthony Armstrong (2011) could be in jeopardy too – and not just by Hardy.
\n
\nThen there is the matter of Gig Harbor. The Tides know that they have a chance to make history as well.
\n
\n“We’ve talked about the (1993) Mead five-man average,” senior Logan Carroll said. “They ran three miles so I’m not sure what that converts to but we’d like to get our down to sub-15:20.”
\n
\nThe 1993 Mead team was widely regarded as one of the best of all-time. And the 2007 North Central team won NXN. So the bar is high for all-time status.
\n
\nIn the Class 3A meet, 2012 NXN finalists North Central and Kamiakin go head-to-head again after NC’s two-point win at last week’s regional in Spokane.
\n
\nAnd the whole meet has been shoved back one week – and that’s probably a good thing. Last Saturday in the Tri-Cities the wind was whipping at 60 miles per hour.
\n
\n“Team-wise, it feels like (the meet) is stacked,” Kamiakin coach Matt Rexus said. “Add a team like Nathan Hale, too. We’re just hoping to be healthy and run well, otherwise no one is going to get it away from (North Central). They’re champions and used to winning.”
\n
\nNorth Central has won seven straight Class 3A titles and has one of America’s best 1-2 punches with Kai Wilmot and Tanner Anderson.
\n
\nIndividually, Mt. Spokane’s Matt Dressel, 14th at Foot Locker Nationals, is yet another potential headline-maker.
\n
\n“With the individuals (at state), it’s something where we’re kind of getting spoiled,” Rexus said. “We had Amy-Eloise and Katie Knight the last four years. At least I Oregon and Washington, it’s raised everyone to another level and no one wants to be left out. But Alexa, she may be even above that.”
\n
\nGig Harbor, led by individual contender Wolfgang Beck, is training for a shot at the NXN title, but the state meet is something the team takes seriously.
\n
\n“No matter whatever else we have going on, running well and competing well at the state meet is always a priority,” Gig Harbor coach Mark Wieczorek said. “Over the last couple years I've come to see Washington as a pretty special state. There is a lot of work being put in by a lot of programs. There are a lot of schools with rich traditions and great coaches.
