Destiny Collins and Marissa Williams just destroyed a Kim Mortensen course record at the Seaside Invitational this afternoon, running separately in the junior and senior races. The previous record was 16:35. Collins ran 15:58.3 and Williams 15:59.8.

While I'm not sure what the team time record was (betting it was held by Saugus, probably 87:33), Great Oak destroyed that as well, running 84:53.2 (or 84:55 if all times are rounded up).

The 3-mile course is apparently faster than it once was (smoothing of sharp turns) but it's not that much faster.

On Ortega vs Williams ...

My end-of-season rankings last December had Marissa Williams 25th, Ortega 27th.

Both of them theoretically could have moved up some from that. What bothered me slightly about Ortega is that she didn't race after May 8. I presume there was an injury there, so that made me a little cautious with her. But she is also the presumed No. 1 for Saugus, which is a great program, so I give her the benefit of the doubt for getting ready for the upcoming season.

Williams slipped a few spots -- but again, these things are so close that a difference of 5 spots is pretty miniscule from 27 to 32. However, the reason why she slipped a bit was her California state meet and 14th in the 3200 finals. Collins, Beneduce, Pietrzyk and McCandless all beat her there pretty handily. Williams was 8th in this race in 2013 and 10 seconds faster. She could have an awesome fall, and I hope she does, but her most recent "big" race left something to be desired.

I agree. For what its worth she was quoted the week before the state meet, when interviewed by Rich Gonzales, where she said she was upset that her coach was making her run 4 weeks of 1600/800/3200 triples just prior to the two day state meet event and wanted to just focus on the 1600. I suspect the 3200 was a combination of perhaps being overworked, peaking too soon, and a lack of motivation/desire. Collins beat her handily, but the others did not run 1600, so that isn't a fair comparison. Those nearly every girl who wasn't in the 1600 PRed while those that were in the 1600 did not. I don't think that is a coincidence. That said, she was in the 1600 last year as well when she ran 10 seconds faster. I'd argue that her 10:30 3200 two hours after running the 1600m finals last year was probably better than her 10:25 at Arcadia this year. Last year however, she wasn't forced to triple at LACS and league prelims and finals.
"1109756":

Matthew,

I believe the difference that separates Marissa and Samantha is their performances at the national meets - NXN and and FLN. Since these are national rankings, Doug has to be looking at these two national meets as his first comparison. Samantha Ortega ran 17:53 at FLN for 15th place, while Marissa Williams ran 18:01 at NXN for 24th. Both strong performances, but in my opinion Samantha's performance was stronger on a relative basis as the Foot Locker field is generally more elite. I haven't taken the time to compare quantitatively, but that's what is likely behind the difference.
