\nGiven the criteria you've outlined, not quite sure how Great Oak drops 15 places because Spencer Dodds was sick and unable to run at SS Finals.
\n
\nHave to agree that your Maton and Durney examples are contradictory (since both Maton and Durney ran in their state meets).

\nDerney ran NJ Groups. Groups is the All-State Qualifying meet for the NJ Meet of Champions, which is the New Jersey State Finale.
\n
\nIt would be pretty unfair if I considered two different meets as "State Meets" for any state. That's why it's always been my policy to use the last "state meet" any team competes in (meaning, for example, NY Federations if the NY team runs at Feds, or NJ MOC if NJ teams run MOC - which they all do if they qualify). Or, for a CA comparison (which is a much more apples to apples comparison IMO as NY Feds isn't exactly a mandatory race), I don't include what athletes run at CIF-SS Prelims as being the same as what they run at CIF-SS Finals.
\n
\nEDIT: As for Great Oak, they've been SLOWLY dropping pretty much ever since three weeks after NPN (they ran well enough at Clovis and Mt. SAC to delay the drop, but even Mt. SAC was more than a month ago now). NPN was their best race of the year, and while most of their guys have run that well at some point since, not all have. Their dropping in the rankings isn't simply due to Dodds not racing at CIF-SS Finals (although IF he had finished alongside Doan, they would still be #5 or 6). Especially coming from someone who has talked about the importance of team standings at meets in the past, I don't see what the confusion is on how GO drops given the criteria discussed though... obviously, if any team misses a frontrunner like Dodds, it's going to hurt them quite a bit in the rankings. It's not like there aren't a whole host of teams close enough to take advantage of that (as you saw at CIF-SS Finals).","date_added":"Nov 28th 2014, 8:14pm","nest":0,"liked":false,"member":[],"can_delete":false,"item_id":302517,"item_type":"news","pb_image":"\/\/www.runnerspace.com\/forum\/uploads\/av-43715.jpg","pb_title":"watchout","pb_url":"profile.php?member_id=43715","pb_url_dns":"https:\/\/www.runnerspace.com\/profile.php?member_id=43715","pb_wally_id":"1073498"},"1180288":{"pb_id":"53039","pb_type":"members","likes":"0","parent_id":"0","pid":"1180288","comment_id":"1180288","member_id":"53039","comment":"Any explanation on Timpanogos's high ranking? Maton of Summit ran States and sat NXN Regional. You include Maton. You don't include Durney. Am I missing something? Love the rankings. Think they are great and add excitement and discussion to the sport. Just wondering since you offered the two as examples.

\n
\n1. Sometimes the order at the NXN Regional meet is not the order in the rankings. This is because I include any athlete that ran Varsity for the team in the state meet, NXN Regional meet, and NXN National meet. Case in point is Summit OR, who is ranked ahead of the NW Champion North Central because I include their #1 (Matthew Maton) in the rankings, who didn't run NXN NW after winning the Oregon State meet (because he is running Foot Locker West instead). This is a policy I have had since the very first year I did rankings for DyeStat (2007).
\n
\n2. Rankings are NOT based solely on what happened at the latest race for the team. This is the post season, I am looking at who runs well most importantly at their latest meet, but also giving credit to running well (or not) at previous championship meets (at this point, the State meet). In other words, consistency matters<\/span>. That is why York IL is "only" US#39 this week - their regional race was better than that (it was by far their best race of the year, probably worth something around a US#25 ranking), but their ranking is tempered by what they ran at IL State (a much more "average" race for them).
\n
\n3. If a runner does NOT run varsity at the state meet or beyond, they are not really factored into the ranking. Case in point is CBA, who held out Aiden Derney at the New Jersey MOC. Had he run (and ran his usual race), they would have been ahead of Kamiakin at US#19.
