Our Current Prediction:

Desert Vista AZ

Notes: Each of the past two years, the Nike Southwest has placed two teams in the top five at NXN. In each of the past three years, the Southwest has secured at least one at-large bid, with two at-large bids coming in 2015. Clearly the Southwest has solidified itself as one of the top regions in the country and the depth is there again this year with five teams in the national top 24.

The order of the top five has stayed consistent all year long with Springville UT, Desert Vista AZ, American Fork UT, Timpanogos UT and Mountain Vista CO occupying those spots since the preseason rankings. It would be a big upset if the three podium spots didn’t come from those five teams Saturday in Casa Grande, Ariz. Springville UT won the Utah 5A championship and had a 1-5 runner average 23 seconds faster than its nearest competitor, 6A champion American Fork. Springville is the clear favorite, but there is an 80-second gap between its fifth and sixth runners and there is no margin for error in order for Springville to win. Desert Vista AZ is the pick for the second spot. An NXN bid would be the first for a team from Arizona. Packed behind Desert Vista is American Fork UT, Timpanogos UT and Mountain Vista CO, all with the firepower to win the region outright on a great day.

The Nike Southwest is a bubble region for an at-large bid at this point even with the highly ranked teams. It will depend upon how the race plays out and the position of that third team. Given the rise of the Southeast and continued strength of New York, the Midwest and California, the only way a Southwest team can assure itself of a trip to Portland is to finish in the top two. One streak on the line is the eight straight NXN trips for American Fork, second in the nation only to Fayetteville-Manlius NY’s nine.

Our preseason picks to qualify for NXN:

Broomfield CO

Battle Mountain CO

Our Current Prediction:

Mountain Vista CO

Battle Mountain CO

Notes: This appears to be a strong year for Colorado. The state has the three top teams in the Southwest Region, led by Mountain Vista. The Golden Eagles are currently ranked No. 10 in the nation, but could move up with a good performance at the NXR Southwest Regional.

Not too far behind Mountain Vista is 4A champion Battle Mountain and 5A runner-up Broomfield. The two teams, despite competing in different races at the Colorado State meet, had nearly identical performances. Either team could take the second automatic berth for NXN.

Outside of Colorado, there are several teams from Utah that could factor into the top Southwest Region spots. Pleasant Grove came away the winner at the Utah 6A State meet. But several other teams could factor in, including Pine View, Skyline and American Fork.

Chandler AZ is another team that could finish in the top five Saturday. Despite season-ending injuries to two of its usual top five runners, Chandler still ran well enough to win the Arizona Division 1 State title, but the Wolves will really need to step up if they are going to challenge the teams from Colorado and Utah.
