Hellen Obiri Only Athlete Offered Wildcard Entry Into Commonwealth Games by Athletics Kenya

Ayumba Ayodi of the Daily Nation reports Athletics Kenya has offered only one wildcard entry into the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in April in Gold Coast, Australia. That wild-card entry will go to Hellen Obiri.

Obiri, the 2017 IAAF World Outdoor Championships 5,000-meter winner, ran a personal best for the indoor 1,500 meters Thursday in Torun, Poland, clocking 4:05.04 for third.

All other Kenyan athletes looking to qualify for the Commonwealth Games are competing in a trials event this weekend at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani.

Obiri appears to have requested the exemption to skip the trials event. She is reportedly the only athlete to have made that request.
