Interesting - California (Whittier) has Woodbridge on their website but I now see they aren't in the entries. McFarland, however, I see listed on both meet websites.

If I remember right, wasn't Centennial NV also listed as competing in both meets?

I guess we'll find out which meet they choose in a few days...

Haha sorry Steve! I will try to remember to call it how we usually do, California (Whittier). They were an NXN team last year so they are legit!

I'm not aware of any California team attending Bob Firman this year. If you hear of one please let me know.

Watchout for BobFirman, Boise ID, this weekend (Arcadia, North Central, Davis, & Ogden to name a few.

And US#2 Gig Harbor to name another.

Arcadia is at Woodbridge this weekend.

Check out runnercard.com 2013 results from Murray Invit: US # 63 Ogden UT - 1st with impressive times for 5K at altitude. Two under 16min & #5-16:30.

These types of predictions are great for banter, even the early meets will not prove as a measuring stick as some teams will be resting or having others racing a little different. I know in NY it will quiet until Mid/late October at the Manhattan Invitational and then the conference championships. Personally I think Northport and St. Anthonys ahead of Saratoga Springs and Fayetville is a mistake. Saratoga is the reigning state champs (yes they lost 1) and Fayetville is well Fayetville. But i guess if you are using the spring 3,200 times as a measuring stick that is the conclusion.
watchout
Absolutely, I think there are always pleasant surprises. I wouldn't be too worried about teams NOT living up to expectations in the first couple weeks of the season, though.

FWIW, this is what I had projected for West Plains this year. Projected (rounded) times on the right for a standard fairly-fast 5k, and their (rounded) times at Memphis Twilight on the left:

16:05 Camden Barrett 16:05
16:30 Jeremy Inman 16:15
16:50 Kameron Moss 16:20
16:35 Jordan Inman 16:30
16:30 Quentin Keller 16:35
17:10 Ransom Nichols 17:05

Surprises:
4 White, Dylan 10 West Plains HS 16:28.47 3

But the important note: The projections are where I have them FINISHING the year, not starting the year. So while some runners aren't there yet, if this was a fairly-fast course, others already are.

The important aspect to take away from the meet for West Plains is the emergence Dylan White. He'll make a difference in the rankings (and Keller's better-than-expected improvement will be taken into consideration as well)
ThatRunnerDude
I think that it is safe to say that many under ranked teams have exceeded the expectations of those making them. They have improved more than expected and while its still very early in the season, we can expect to see even better improvements from those teams.

I can recall that no missouri team races on a 3 mile course except SLUH who attends the palatine invite, and many missouri teams do not compete against high level competition and if you add the average time for the .1 in a 5k to those times, they arent much better at all.

Except that those times were run at altitude, and the difference between a 3 mile vs. 5k and sea-level vs. 4530' is not that significant (3 mile -> 5k is ~3.6% difference, while the difference at ~4500' vs. sea-level is ~2.4%).

So, IF we were to assume that the courses had similar terrain, then...

Westlake 5k equivalents = roughly 15:55-15:55-16:20-16:20-16:25
while West Plains MO was, roughly, 16:05-16:30-16:30-16:30-16:35

again, not taking into account the likely dissimilar terrain.

That suggests that there is not a significant (considering how early it is in the season, and the level of competition in these races) difference between the two teams, aside from the #2 runners which is in favor of preseason US#119 Westlake UT, unless either the Memphis Twilight had much more rough terrain/worse conditions (would have to be more than a 10 second difference due to terrain and other conditions for West Plains to pull even).

By the way, Westlake's meet also included US#3 American Fork, US#46 Riverton, US#90 Lone Peak, and a good but unranked (in the SW and the US) Herriman team.
This is how it turned out:

Coach Mostert, on , said:

Utah's Region of Death
Region IV Pre-Region 3.00 miles at Westlake HS, Saratoga Springs, Utah. 4530 ft. altitude.

1.AF 76:18, 1,2,6,8,12,(13,14, 18,20,30,31)=29 points. 1.Connor McMillan 14:47.2 (5:09,4:55, 4:43)
(Old course record Chuk Mitchell, Herriman 15:07, 2012) 9 boys under 16:00.
2,.Lone Peak 78:28, 3,7,15,19,23,(27,35)=67, 4 boys under 16:00
3.Westlake 79:09, 9,10,20,21,22,(25),(32) =82, 4 boys under 16:00
4.Riverton 79:47, 5,11,16,36,37,(39), (40) = 105
5.Herriman 79:51, 4,18,26,29,31,(38),(41)=108
6.Pleasant Grove 81:46, 150
7.Lehi 85:24, 191

tl;dr - West Plains is looking good, as expected, though Westlake (which did get ranked just inside the top 120) is looking better so far. Both teams look capable of competing with US Top-50 type teams, as do other unranked teams. Because there are a lot more than 120 teams in the US that can compete at that level.
But keep up the debate, because West Plains is one of many teams that deserve to be kept on the radar, because they a good team that might sneak into the mid-season rankings, and even more likely is they end up on the deeper post-season rankings. The more I, and others, are informed, the better my (and others) rankings will be ... ideally. Plus, these teams are all worthy of mentioning, so keep on mentioning them!

West plains is capable of contending with most teams in the top 50 now. Sluh is in it, Rock Bridge. West Plains had a 31 second 1-5 split at Memphis Twilight with the 5th man being 16:35. Sluh is as good or better than them. Just think Missouri teams should have gotten a little more recognition.

Just to give you an idea, Westlake HS, UT (#119) went 15:34, 15:34, 15:57, 15:59, 16:03, 16:09, 16:19 for 3 miles at 4,500ft elevation and were third in a meet of 7 teams (American Fork, UT & Lone Peak, UT; Riverton, UT also ranked, was 4th). Though Missouri may have some good teams, they don't stack up to this according to what you have indicated.

That's the beauty of these lists/threads. The more people that see and critique them, the more attention that is brought to everyone. That in turn leads to more recognition for unranked teams once the season gets underway.

Because there are far more than 120 teams capable of being in the top 120.

For Missouri, I looked at Festus, Warrensburg, Raymore-Peculiar, Liberty, West Plains and Wildwood Lafayette in addition to St. Louis University. Those are all good teams, they just didn't make the pre-season cut. Maybe they (or others) will be there by the end of the year.

Why is only 1 Missouri team ranked in the top 120? I know that there are at least 3 capable of being in it!

That's big... they'll still be good, but that probably bumps them down to around Madera South's level.

The further back you go, the more I'm bound to miss. The top teams in the nation typically aren't difficult to track down, but #11-30 teams in the region can be more of a challenge. That's the reason why I always start up my threads on here, to help identify the teams that aren't so noticeable but can make an impact on the state and regional level.

I didn't include any of those three Indiana teams. I'll add them in now based on what's posted online and see where they would end up.

EDIT: Ok, based on the combined knowledge of Milespilt, Dyestat and Athletic.net, this is what I have returning for those three teams (indoor+outdoor track anywhere near the posted standards, plus Indiana State and NXN-Midwest for XC):

Lawrence North IN
1. Joe Murphy (12) 4:16.53 1600m, 4:21.60y, 9:51.19 3200m
2. Robel Teklezghi (12) 9:38.43 3200m
3. Jake Hannawalt (12) 9:42.47 3200m
4. Ethan Hoeft (11) 4:32.78 1600m, 4:35.38y
5. (no other runner near the standard)

Brebeuf Jesuit IN
1. Zack Snider (11) 15:47.80 IN State; 4:27.27 1600m, 4:24.13y, 8:35.32 3k, 9:06.05 3200m
2. Nathan Wilkey (12) 18:04.2 NXN-Midwest; 4:21.15 1600m, 9:41.73 3200m
3. Matt Lang (12) 4:21.27 1600m, 9:45.05 3200m
4. Will Coffey (12) 17:19.4 NXN-Midwest; 9:56.36 3200m
5. Robbie Deckard (12) 16:19.41 5k

Fishers IN
1. Calvin Kraft (12) 16:18.0 IN State; 4:19.99 1600m, 9:36.97 3200m
2. Nick Butler (11) 4:34.88 1600m, 9:41.88 3200m
3. Trevor Thompson (10) 4:32.23 1600m, 9:49.89 3200m
4. Daniel Greiwe (10) 9:58.28 3200m
5. (no other runner near the standard)

...

If that's all correct, then Brebeuf Jesuit should have been included. They would have been behind Cathedral, but would have been the next team from the Midwest... so somewhere in the US#86-92 range. The other two teams would have been in the MW#30-40 range (alongside teams like West Lafayette IN or Naperville North IL).

Today at the Franklin Community Invitational in Indiana, Brebeuf Jesuit beat #29 Columbus North by 2 points.
