Preseason Regional Rankings - Southeast - Cross Country - DyestatPublished by
Previewing and Ranking the Southeast By Rob Monroe The 2012 NXN Nationals saw the Southeast boys have their two best finishes in the regional era as Blacksburg VA finished in the top ten and Southeast champion St. Xavier KY finished in 14th, three spots higher than the previous Southeast-best finish of 17th by Brentwood TN in 2011. There is reason for optimism to think the region could duplicate or even exceed that finish this year, as the top of the field looks more nationally competitive than ever. The depth, which has been pretty solid for several years now, also looks impressive as 14 teams rank in the top 120 nationally (third most out of all the regions). It’s a different story on the girls side, as they have had their share of success at NXN in the past, but the marquee program in the region (Tatnall) is only ranked 13th in the region heading into the 2013 season. Tatnall has qualified for NXN each year during the regional era and have a pair of trophy finishes and two more finishes in the top six. Another longtime powerhouse in the region, Midlothian, didn’t make the region’s top 15. This change is due to solid depth in the region (15 teams rank in the top 120 nationally, which just like the boys is third most out of all the regions), and also some very good teams up front highlighted by, but not limited to, Assumption KY who has qualified two years in a row including a tenth place finish last fall. Rankings note: Any runner who was top-5 at any of the championship meets (NXN Nationals, NXN Regionals, and their State Meet) are counted as a "scorer" even if they weren't usually a top-5 runner. The same accounting is used for "varsity" runners. BOYS 1. Brentwood (Brentwood, Tennessee) 2012 NXN-Southeast fourth place; Tennessee 3A State Champion Four scorers and six varsity runners return 2.
