Preseason Regional Rankings - Northeast - Cross Country - DyestatPublished by
Previewing and Ranking the Northeast By Rob Monroe The Northeast region looks primed to have one of its best seasons yet in the NXN era, as two teams on both sides enter the season ranked in the top ten nationally, and a third boys team is on the cusp of the top ten as well. Behind the early favorites is plenty of depth, with 12 teams on each side ranking amongst the top 120 in the nation, making the Northeast the fifth deepest region for both boys and girls. The top of the boys rankings should look familiar, as all of the programs have been very successful over the last half decade. The girls rankings, however, look a little different as some of the region’s major players did not make the top 15, most notably Voorhees NJ and Champlain Valley VT. In fact, the 15 programs ranked only include three trips to NXN Nationals, while eight programs that have combined for 13 trips to Portland start off the season unranked. Part of the reason is also a question this year: Several times in the past, some of the better Northeast teams have opted to not compete at the NXN Regional. Will this year be any different? Will the best girls teams in the region line up to test themselves on November 30? Rankings note: Any runner who was top-5 at any of the championship meets (NXN Nationals, NXN Regionals, and their State Meet) are counted as a "scorer" even if they weren't usually a top-5 runner. The same accounting is used for "varsity" runners. BOYS 1.
