Previewing and Ranking New York

By Rob Monroe

Tradition is the key word in New York. In particular, three programs: Fayetteville-Manlius girls. Saratoga Springs girls. And Fayetteville-Manlius boys. Those three programs have combined for 16 auto-qualifying berths at NXN  out of a possible 18 (not to mention an additional at-large berth). And what do they have to have to show for it? Fayetteville-Manlius has won every single NXN title in the regional era; Saratoga has finished second three times, third another time, fourth another time, and fifth the other time. The Fayetteville-Manlius boys have New York’s only top six finish in the last six years, and two of the region’s three top 10 finishes.

There are threats to that hierarchy this year. Saratoga Springs, for the second year in a row, has had an elite girl athlete transfer to Holy Names Academy. Fayetteville-Manlius has had an elite girl transfer to Pittsford Mendon. Holy Names Academy girls bring back most of their runners from a team that nearly made NXN last year and the aforementioned transfer from Saratoga could put them in position to challenge Fayetteville-Manlius’ seven-year streak at both the regional and national level. Other teams from other regions around the country also look primed to challenge for the national title this fall.

Threats, however, ometimes ring hollow. F-M and Saratoga (aka Stotan and Kinetic) have a history of developing or bringing in new talent to fill in the gaps better than almost anyone else. Saratoga Springs might have lost a lot to graduation and transfers, but have a tremendous group of youngsters that can contribute to keep their streak alive. Fayetteville-Manlius, while not focusing much on track in any year, focused even more this year on simply preparing for this year’s cross country campaign. Time will tell if these programs, all of which rank among the top five programs in the nation over the last six years, will be able to continue their tremendous tradition, or if they might finally succumb to the inevitable challenge of other strong teams champing at the bit for their chance to win a state, regional, or national title, or simply earn a trip to Portland.

Rankings note: Any runner who was top-5 at any of the championship meets (NXN Nationals, NXN Regionals, and their State Meet) are counted as a "scorer" even if they weren't usually a top-5 runner. The same accounting is used for "varsity" runners.

Saratoga is looking much better than I expected, with four 8th graders in their top 6.
As of now they have 6 runners between FM's #3 and #4, per meylan. not sure if all of FM's runners have raced yet?

i think we can safely move Fayetteville back to the top of the class after lasts weeks showing - talk about re-stocking
Joe Lanzalotto
Estela Smith is back at Saratoga.

with the write up you would think that Saratoga and FM were ranked 1 & 2 not 3 and 6. What gives Northport and St. Anthony's and edge over those 2?

The point of the write-up: Those programs lost a lot, and are thus not ranked as highly as they are used to, but they are programs with proven track records of being among the best in the nation, so it shouldn't surprise anyone in the least if they end up in Portland this December.

Also, for clarification, the write-up was singling out the Saratoga GIRLS program, and both programs at Fayetteville-Manlius.

As for what gives Northport and St. Anthony's the edge over FM and Saratoga on the boys side... they return much more.

St. Anthony's has Pat Tucker, Louis Santelli, Tyler Wolfe, Joe Tucker, and John McMullin coming back - that's a strong top five, and they have pretty good #6/7 runners as well.

Northport has Tim McGowan, Mike Branigan, Justin Leopold, Jack McGowan and Nick Termine. That's an even stronger five.

Saratoga counters with Jay Navin, Brent Freestone, Aidan Tooker, Joe Verro, and the next best by the data specified is Ethan North, who as of last year was not really that close to that front quartet.

FM counters with Bryce Millar, Adam Hunt, Andrew Berge, Riley Hughes, and an unknown runner to be developed. That last bit should be all the description necessary - they have a lot of work ahead of them before they can develop into an NXN caliber team.
