Glasmann Named USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week

8/28/2013

INDIANAPOLIS - Megan Glasmann (Park City, Utah) has been named USA Track & Field’s athlete of the week after winning gold in the women's javelin at the Pan American Junior Championships on Sunday in Medellin, Colombia.

Glasmann came from behind to win, uncorking a massive 53.93m/176-11 on her final throw to break the meet record and move to second on the all-time high school list. Her throw added almost three feet to the previous record set in 2011 by Avionne Allgood of the North Las Vegas, Nev.

“I knew I had won on the fifth attempt, I was ahead by that time, so I didn’t necessarily  have to take my last throw of the meet because I had already won, “ Glasmann said. “One of the other coaches asked my parents why I was still throwing, but I really wanted to see if I had anything left in me, and It turned out that I did have quite a bit.”

Glasmann will enroll at Stanford University this fall after enjoying a track season that saw her improve her personal best no less than four times.

“It was a great summer for me, and it was more than I could have imagined,” said Glasmann. “It was one of those seasons where I was consistently climbing from 140s to 160s and the 170s are next.”

Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
