Efraimson-Donaghu rematch coming at Nike Pre-Nats

NIKE PRE-NATIONALS HOMEPAGE

By Doug Binder, Dyestat Editor

It won't take until December for compelling cross country racing to return to Portland Meadows.

On Saturday at Nike Pre-Nationals, the meet hosted by Aloha High School, there are several storylines of regional -- and national -- significance.

The championship girls race features a rematch between Camas (Wash.) junior Alexa Efraimson and Grant (Ore.) sophomore Ella Donaghu. It will be the second time in a month that the top two girls in their respective states have gone head to head.Nike Pre-Nationals logo

And the first meeting caught some people by surprise. Donaghu edged the World Youth Championships bronze medalist by a tenth of a second at Pier Park in North Portland.

Donaghu won't sneak up on Efraimson again.

"Alexa is very confident and ready to race Ella this weekend," Camas coach Laurie Porter said in a Nike Pre-Nationals news release.

Donaghu is the daughter of former Dartmouth standout Michael Donaghu and she made a big splash last spring within Oregon when she ran under the state 3,000-meter record in a narrow loss to Erin Clark in the Class 6A championship final. She also led Grant to its first state title in cross country in 38 years, but didn't pursue national meets at the end of the season.

"Ella is always excited for Nike Pre-Nationals to go up against great competition," Grant coach Doug Winn said in the news release. "She has tremendous respect for Alexa and knows that a rematch will not be easy."
Either way, it should be an intresting race between two of the top individuals in the country.

The boys race features two of the top finishers in last week's Bob Firman Invitational, senior Wolfgang Beck of Gig Harbor (Wash.) and junior Elijah Armstrong from Pocatello (Idaho). Beck was second and Armstrong was third in that race.

In last year's Jim Danner Championship race, Beck won it and Armstrong was second.

Oregon's top runner, junior Matthew Maton of Summit, is also in the mix. Maton broke 15 minutes for 5,000 meters in his first big effort of the season, at the South Salem Invitational, earlier this month. Also, Benjamin Gonzalez from Warren (Calif.), who was 10th in last week's Cross Country Classic (Woodbridge) sweepstakes race, is viable contender as well.

Gig Harbor's boys will also get another chance to test out their No. 2 national ranking against a quality field.

"The boys have handled the attention well," coach Mark Wieczorek said in the news release. "They know it isn't guaranteed and just because someone says you deserve something that doesn't mean anything until you go out and do it."

Saturday's meet is expected to include about 125 teams, including Archbishop Spalding making the trip out from Maryland.

About Nike Pre-Nationals

The Nike Pre-National Meet was first run in 2007 at Portland Meadows. Before 2007, the meet was known as the Jim Danner Memorial Invitational and was first run in 1980 at venues across the greater Portland area. The Pre-National Meet is now held on the same course as the Nike Cross Nationals Meet held every December for the top high school cross country programs and individual runners in the nation. The Pre-National meet was created in part to allow prospective qualifying teams and individuals to race the national championship course and to raise the regional and national image of the competing programs.

I hadn't sifted through the results deep enough to see that Oldenburg finally ran. Will be interesting to see where he ends up. Many people thought he was supposed to be Gig's savior at #5 but Hammer has been doing a solid job at that.

Thanks watchout. Yes Gig's 1-3 times obviously were superior and more telling at Firman but obviously Hammer and Moussa ran better at Danner/Nike based on your conversion to Sun Willows (well Hammer big time and perhaps Moussa).

Hammer, yes. Moussa ran slower (based on my conversions).

Charlie Sheilds ran faster at Danner than Bob Firman as well, though, but he was even better at Sundodger and is likely to be one of the #6-10 runners in the end (so maybe on varsity, but not likely to be a scorer by the look of it). As SteveU suggested (and Doug Binder's recap implied), they probably ran as a group with their #5 (Hammer) to push him to a better time. And it seemed to work, since he ran about 7 seconds faster than he did last week (based on my conversions).

Here's the Sun Willows equivalents that Gig Harbor's top 9 have run through their first three meets (this meet and Sundodger were controlled efforts):

Sundodger - Bob Firman - Nike Pre-Nationals
1 Wolfgang Beck: 15:34.96 - 14:53.17 - 15:52.47
2 Logan Carroll: 15:35.08 - 15:15.52 - 15:52.38
3 Tristan Peloquin: 15:35.04 - 15:22.06 - 15:52.98
4 Mahmoud Moussa: 15:34.85 - 15:43.43 - 15:53.12
5 Michael Hammer: DNS - 15:59.53 - 15:52.30
6 Charlie Shields: 16:49.77 - 17:12.62 - 17:06.26
7 Jack Shields: 16:52.87 - 17:21.99 - ??? (didn't look at sub-Danner yet)
8 Jordan Oldenburg: DNS - DNS - 16:56.34
9 Ryan Gregory: 17:31.23 - 17:29.40 - ??? (didn't look at sub-Danner yet)

Of course, conversions are never going to be perfect, but the rough idea applies: The top 4 didn't push it this week, and about all you can take from this is that Michael Hammer ran a little better this week when he had his teammates around him pushing him on.

What, you don't think they were maxing out with that 0.86 second #1-5 spread? :)

Girls results up now, too. No contest this time, at least so the times show: Efraimson 17:59, Donaghu 18:40. Don't know how it unfolded.

Any word on Donaghu vs. Efraimson II?
watchout
Luckily, the rainstorm has hit more north than expected, and Portland didn't see all that much rain.

8-day total is at 1.17 and only the Danner Championship races are left (first is going on right now, I think).

Looks like the efforts by Nike to keep the course in better condition has paid off - initial estimate is that times are running about 20-30 seconds faster than NXN 2007, which had very similar rainfall leading up to the race.
watchout
Maybe. But for whatever reason, when I was researching this over the summer (in reviewing past NXN ratings), it seemed like the 8 days leading up to the meet had by far the strongest correlation. I only went out as far as 20 days though, and there are of course other factors that play into it as well.
dkap
Great research, watchout, but I think and hope that time of year will factor in, as well. December races have a month plus of solid rain, completely saturating the ground and making drainage near impossible, whereas this weekend might be mostly surface muck after just one bad week or so.

Too bad the championship races aren't first thing in the morning, though. Six hours of stampeding might make the course a mess, regardless.

Good preview. It should be a fun day. I am curious what the course conditions are going to be like. I'm not expecting anything like December, but with a wet last week or two, and rain predicted for tomorrow, I'm assuming the course conditions are going to be worse than typical for this meet. I guess we'll find out what it looks like out there Saturday morning.

Though probably not as bad as NXN 2012, I think it's safe to assume this is going to be NXN type conditions. Over the last week, and adding what's expected today and tonight, you're talking about 1.5-2.5 inches of rain. Lucky this meet isn't on Sunday or Monday, because it would be even worse then (storm supposed to get the worse and worse with 2.5-3.5 inches by Monday).

Guess we'll get an early preview as to how effective Nike's new measures are going to be to maintain better course conditions...

EDIT: Assuming the best, the rainfall profile is closest to 2010... a reminder of how that race went, here's the top 10's:

1 Lukas Verzbicas 11 Midwest-1 15:59.2
2 Edward Cheserek 13 Northeast-2 16:01.5
3 Craig Lutz 11 Highland Village 16:04.4
4 Ammar Moussa 11 Arcadia XC Club 16:16.3
5 Spencer Wenck 11 Southwest-1 16:19.8
6 Lane Werley 11 California-3 16:24.3
7 Ryan Urie 11 California-4 16:28.2
8 Brian Gohlke 11 South-1 16:28.8
9 Tony Somaragiewicz 12 Heartland-1 16:29.9
10 Kenji Bierig 11 Central Spokane 16:30.5

1 Rachel Johnson 11 South-1 18:18.6
2 Christie Rutledge 12 Manlius XC Club 18:21.4
3 Amy-Eloise Neale 13 Northwest-2 18:48.8
4 Katie Sischo 12 Manlius XC Club 18:49.7
5 Haley Pierce 12 Wilmington XC Club 18:50.4
6 Jillian Fanning 13 Manlius XC Club 18:51.7
7 Shaylyn Tuite 11 New York-3 18:52.1
8 Katie Knight 13 Northwest-1 18:53.3
9 Caroline Hardin 14 Bozeman XC Club 18:53.5
10 Brittany Winslow 11 New York-1 18:54.2

8-day rainfall measurements leading up to NXN the past few years:

2012 = 2.19 inches
2011 = 0.61 inches
2010 = 1.35 inches
2009 = 0.23 inches
2008 = 0.29 inches
2007 = 1.19 inches

which would suggest it'll be as sloppy as 2010 at best, though possibly as bad as 2012. If Nike's new measures end up alleviating 20%, it might end up closer to 2007 (and so the boys winning time might be as good as the 15:50-16:20 range tomorrow) or, at worst, slightly better than 2012.
