Joe Hardy wins showdown at Richland

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

It was a busy weekend some important mega-meets and a lot of other schools engaged in the early stages of championship season. In Utah there were regional meets. In Michigan, there were numerous county championships.

The biggest events of the weekend were the Manhattan Invitational and Clovis Invitational. I made it out to the George Fox Invitational for a few hours.

But here's a look at some of the other big meets and goings-on this weekend.

At the Richland Invitational, there was a marquee boys race that featured Seattle Prep's Joe Hardy taking on the elite boys of the Greater Spokane League -- John Dressel of Mt. Spokane and Kai Wilmot and Tanner Anderson of North Central.

There wasn't a lot of spacing separating these guys. Hardy, US#3 individual, won the three-mile race 14:47.7, Dressel was next in 14:49.6, Wilmot was third in 14:51.7 and Anderson was fourth in 14:54.3. All of it only serves to set up another blockbuster Washington state meet. US#7 North Central scored a scant 69 points.

Lindsey Bradley of Richland was the girls' winner in 17:48.1. Henry Jackson won the team title.

At one of the largest meets in the Northwest, the Hole In The Wall Invitational in Lakewood, the Bellarmine Prep swept the team titles. And the girls, in particular, were impressive by scoring 84 points to beat Sehome (105) for the team title.

Individually, Devon Grove of Lake Washington ran 15:30.8 for the win and Miler Haller of Edmonds-Woodway was second in 15:39.7. RESULTS

Lakeside duo Sophie Cantine, a freshman, and Andrea Masterson, a junior, crossed the finish line together in 18:16.2.

--- FLORIDA ---

At the Florida State Cross Country Invitational in Tallahassee, junior Sukhi Khosla of Leon backed up his best time in the state by dipping under 15 minutes in a competitive boys field that included Mac Macoy of Vestavia Hills, the best runner in Alabama.

In a very competitive team competition, Chiles scored 165 to edge Belen Jesuit Prep's 175.

Caroline Barlow, a senior at Gulf Coast, ran 17:54 for the win. Estero took the team title with 121 points.

DistancePreps was on hand with video coverage.

--- COLORADO ---

On Friday in Fossil Ridge, freshman Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins starred again at the Front Range League Championships with a 28-second win in 17:35.4. And the Lambkins were also dominant with five finishers in the top 10 (and 30 points).

Paul Miller of Poudre ran 15:59 to win the boys race, while Fort Collins took the team title.

--- MISSOURI ---

At the Suburban West Confernce meet in Cedar Hill, Hannah Long of Eureka was in top form running 17:17.5 to win the race by 83 seconds.

And in the boys race, Noah Kauppila of Marquette ran 15:29 for a 39-second victory.
Eureka's girls and Lafayette's boys were the team winners.

At the Potosi Invitational, Taylor Werner of Ste. Geneveieve ran off with a 17:14 victory and hit the finish chute 1:42 ahead of her runner-up Mia Jerman, her teammate.

--- CALIFORNIA ---

In Belmont at the Junipero Serra Crystal Springs Invitational, US#17 Central Catholic (Oregon) showed up in a big way and showed why they are one of the top teams in the Northwest. Senior Kyle Thompson dipped under 15 minutes to win the championship race on the 2.95-mile course. The Rams put their five across between Thompson's 14:58 and put all seven in by 15:56 and scored 46 points. Bellarmine College Prep (Calif.) was second with 81.

Meanwhile, Anna Maxwell of San Lorenzo Valley ran 17:00 to win the girls championship race by 59 seconds. Aptos captured the team title with 62 points while Maxwell's SLV team was second with 88.

Please disregard or modify a previous post I contributed about rating Northport, L.I. Boys.
They did not run at Manhattan, but did very well week earlier at Homdel.
Looking at Saturday results from Sunken Meadow State Park their ranking becomes more nebulous, even regionally.
They edged Miller Place by a point but top finishers from Holmdel apparently did not race. Average time was slower than runner up and the winner of another race that day.
So, should they be rated on potential or actual performance?
As a casual observer, I sense that Northport has more ambitious goals than dominating a local meet. Is such gamesmanship really fair to competitors?
Just toss this out to be skewered by those who know more than me but I think it is worth discussing.

That was Belen's first loss to a team from Florida since 2010, I think.
