A primer

Here is the link to the OSAA.org homepage (I'm not sure if I like the new site as well as the old one, which I thought was one of the best in the country).

Recent Oregon meet results

2012 State Meet Results

RunnerSpace Event Page

The relevant meet records:

Boys -- Galen Rupp (Central Catholic), 2003, 14:55

Girls -- Melissa Lucas (Jesuit), 1993, 17:34.9

After one of the driest Octobers on record, it could rain on Saturday in Eugene but the course should be fine regardless. Matthew Maton of Summit could be the best runner in Oregon since Galen Rupp and Ella Donaghu of Grant might have a shot at the meet 20-year-old course record.  Central Catholic and St. Mary's go in as the Class 6A team favorites.

This is a thread starter. I will be at this meet for a few hours on Saturday (I've been covered the last 13 of these).

Woah. Playing down. Didn't notice this either. Brilliant, OSAA. Competitive balance at its best.
watchout
The Forest Grove situation is just ridiculous. Have them play in the Metro - yes, it's tough, and they might feel overmatched... but that is the local 6A league. Or, as an (much worse) alternative, send them to the TRL and leave St. Mary's in the MHC.

And, if that isn't good enough, let that be a greater incentive to push the OSAA back to fewer classifications, so that there could be more potential options for league alignments in the area.

Summit needs to play sports against Bend, Mountain View, Redmond, etc ... regardless of how good they are in a few sports. Financially it doesn't make sense to travel to the valley over and over again for things like volleyball, soccer, basketball, football, etc.

I guess I had never taken a close look at the 5A numbers until just now, but I had no idea that Bend and Summit have been allowed to opt down. At 1397 and 1281 students, respectively, they are both above the 1257 enrollment cutoff for 5A.

http://www.osaa.org/...arDistricts.pdf

I find this odd, when Forest Grove and West Albany are nearly as far apart as Bend/Summit are from the Salem and Eugene schools (2+ hrs vs 2.5 hrs). I'm sure [mountain] travel safety is one of the considerations, but that argument fell on deaf ears with the original 6A reclassification placing Redmond in with the Salem schools.

I didn't realize it was up to the schools to make that decision. I thought it was based on school population. But I don't know much about it either.

Student enrollment determines where schools are placed, but they can opt up a level if they choose. It's usually ok'd, although I believe Marist had a tough time with it a few years ago.

Summit as a school decided not to play up an compete in 6A. A head scratcher for such a competitive school in many sports.

Anyway... the Union thing is food for thought. Certainly a new benchmark for the 3A/2A/1A level.

Union girls were very very impressive. They would have been second in 4A and as you said very well in 5A and 6A. It is rare that a 3A/2A/1A team would be at all competitive in the 6A race.

I'm curious whether you think the bark dust trail makes times faster. I have to believe it's a little bit slower.

I think it makes it faster on average, given how muddy it got around the track bowl in previous years. By the end of the 6A races, it wasn't unusual to sink into 6" of mud. Maybe it's a bit of an equalizer: slower in dry years (more energy expenditure), and faster in wet years.

A video I did with Jackson Mestler (of Sheldon) and his dad, Rick (1988 state 3K champ).

Thanks to Adam Schneider for editing/uploading.

I think the course has undergone little plusses and minuses over the years -- and of course three years ago it was pretty significantly different. There have certainly been some wet years but more often than not it has been dry.

I'm curious whether you think the bark dust trail makes times faster. I have to believe it's a little bit slower.
However, the start on the Fieldturf vs. the old grass... has to be a little faster.

Anyway... the Union thing is food for thought. Certainly a new benchmark for the 3A/2A/1A level.

A "course conditions" asterisk always has to be placed alongside comparisons like that. This year and last had much more solid footing than other recent years, due to weather and drainage improvements.

Still, that's great front running and depth for a small school.

Hey, I wanted to swing back around and take a closer look at the results from Saturday and point out that the small-school win by Union-Cove girls is FAR AND AWAY the best in the 3A/2A/1A meet's history.

Union went 18:42 - 19:03 - 19:58 - 20:08 - 21:00

How good is that?

I did some research...

Plugging those times into the 6A meet (or previous 4A) ... Union would have WON the large-school state titles in 1997 and 2001.

With those five times, Union would also have placed second in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2008. Most of those years Union would have been quite competitive with Jesuit through four but then outmatched at 5. 21 minutes is worth about 50 points on average.

Anyway .... congratulations to Union for pushing the envelope. This year, Union would have placed sixth in the Class 6A meet and third in Class 5A.
watchout
Very good day for the Oregon boys...

If the state meet was any indication, I think the Oregon boys have a chance to challenge the Washington boys at Borderclash. I think the Washington girls are pulling away though (the SW Washington girls alone are about on par with the top 20 times at the Oregon State Meet).

Very quick scoring, looking at only last weekend's meets:

Boys = Oregon 26, Washington 29
1. Matthew Maton (OR)
2. John Dressel (WA)
3. Kyle Thompson (OR)
4. Tanner Anderson (WA)
5. Reilly Bloomer (OR)
6. Kai Wilmot (WA)
7. Mitchell Butler (OR)
8. Nicholas Hauger (WA)
9. Michael Williams (WA)
10. Mack Marbas (OR)

Girls = Washington 22, Oregon 39
1. Alexa Efraimson (WA)
2. Hannah Gindlesperger (OR)
3. Ella Donaghu (OR)
4. Lindsey Bradley (WA)
5. Alexis Fuller (WA)
6. RaynJoy Norton (WA)
7. Alissa Pudlitzke (WA)
8. Andrea Masterson (WA)
9. Nicole Goecke (WA)
10. Sara Tsai (OR)
11. Gracie Tostenson (OR)
12. Shaylen Crook (OR)

the Suislaw duo and Reilly Bloomer have to duplicate their great races, though. And I think several of the Washington boys can run quite a bit faster than they did at their district meets which should swing a few points in Washington's favor (such as Gig Harbor's quartet challenging the above top 10, and Beck possibly top 5; also the Seattle kids like Joe Hardy, of course, and probably some of the 2A guys like Devon Grove ... but just Hardy alone, if he were to finish a conservative fifth, that would swing it to 27-29 in Washington's favor, with the added depth of other athletes running harder than they did at Districts would probably make the score more like 26-33).

I was curious about that, but hadn't heard anything. I wonder if they would have if Bend/Mt. View did, as well. They'd be pretty isolated as a 6A school, but competitively it makes a ton of sense.

Unfortunately, even if we get a Regional system, it doesn't look like there's a push to combine 5A and 6A at that stage...

I was really impressed with Gindlesperger's fitness and pace control at the Saxon Invite back in mid-September. She looked every bit as dominant as Maton.

Every time Summit races separate from the 6A schools, I leave the meet feeling somewhat cheated...

I was at the state meet in Oregon, probably mostly impressed by Hannah Gindlesperger (we're all learning what to expect from Matthew Maton at this point!). I remember her winning the frosh 3000 at the Oregon Relays, and now she seems to be on top of the state in XC. The Oregon girls keep coming up, perhaps she'll be the silver bullet at BorderClash!

The 5A girls award stand. I didn't get more like these because the sun behind made getting decent photos almost impossible for the final three races.
