NXN Southwest chocked full of headliners

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

ENTRIES

It's been a month since the Utah state meet and on Saturday some of the top runners in that state will find out whether the time in between races at Sugar House State Park and Toka Sticks (Mesa, Ariz.) has been well spent.

The NXN Southwest is shaping up as a blockbuster with superstar individuals from Colorado and super teams from Utah leading the charge.

But that extra month has already wiped out one team's hopes. The US#9 Park City girls won't be competing as a team, though they will have three individuals in the race. Three of the team's top performers aren't able to make it, which caused plans to change.

"Last year, we were leading NXN-SW through four runners and failed to make it," Park City coach Steve Cuttitta said. "This year, we were even better, and couldn't put it together. (I) guess we'll just keep working at it."

Even without Park City, the girls team competition is stacked with US#2 Davis UT, US#10 Fort Collins CO, US#15 Monarch CO and US#19 Desert Vista at the top of the list. This is a region that should see a third team added through an at-large selection, but that determination will come later.

Individually, this would seem to be Elise Cranny's show. The US#3 individual won here last year in 16:59 and has been virtually untouched all season. The Niwot (Colorado) senior will go up against Utah 5A champion Lucy Biles, Colorado 5A champion Lauren Gregory, 4A runner-up Katie Rainsberger, Arizona champion Danielle Jones and Nevada champion Sydney Badger -- among others.

On the boys side, US#6 American Fork of Utah will get a chance to re-establish itself in the national pecking order after a sensational state meet. US#14 Arizona champ Corona del Sol will have a short commute but could be pressed for that second berth by US#25 Lone Peak UT, US#38 Orem UT, always-tough Davis UT and Mountain Vista of Colorado.

After a disappointing experience at Foot Locker Midwest last year, Denver East star and US#1 individual Cerake Geberkidane decided to give NXN Southwest a try. It will be his first race outside of Colorado this season and should provide a legitimate gauge of his national championship potential. He will see Connor McMillan, who won the Utah state race, Conner Mantz of Utah, who was 12th at Foot Locker last year, Kramer Morton of Alta, 16th at Foot Locker last year, Clayson Shumway, who was eighth at NXN SW last year, and Arizona state champ Nate Rodriguez.

Looks like they updated the results on the website to reflect the video review: Fort Collins won their sixth title in the seven year history of the event.

I got a chance to talk to Elise Cranny tonight. Here is what she had to say:

"When I got (to the course) it was muddy and super windy. It was more like (the race) was in Portland than it's ever been here before. It was definitely weird today."

"(The ditches) were mostly water, there was not much mud. (The state meet) in Colorado the water (crossings) weren't very deep and we only had to do it twice. These were deeper.

"At first I was disappointed because I wanted to run faster, but to be only four seconds slower compared to last year, and it being harder to navigate through the mud ... the last part is a flat, straight stretch and it was muddy everywhere, so I couldn't be too disappointed. The ground was a little like (Portland). One of my teammates ran in the open race and lost her shoe."

"I've been working (the past month) on a lot more speed. I have a lot of strength and I'm fine-tuning, I guess, and doing some more speed work. (The weather at home) wasn't bad until Wednesday-Thursday when it was 16 degrees and snowing. Other than that it's been nice."

"I'm excited to race (Sarah Baxter and Alexa Efraimson). We had so much fun (meeting) but since Nike camp we haven't seen each other. They've been running really fast."

Well so far there isn't any mud at Portland Meadows ... but we do have 14 days remaining.
Coach Mostert
Cerake was through in 4:38, 9:40 (as far as I could tell). The chase pack was at 4:53. They only cross the ditch 4 times. As muddy as the course was by the time of the championship races, it wasn't as muddy as the best course at NXN.

Did Park City UT girls not compete?

Nope, two of their scorers (#1 and #5) weren't going to be able to make it.

Their #2/3 runners finished 5th and 11th. Their #4 finished 55th. If they had everyone there, they would have been in the mix through four runners, but their #5 wouldn't have been high enough to beat Monarch. They would have been around 125-130 points, solidly fourth.

Just guessing at the situation here, but...

Meet management probably reviewed the video before handing out the trophies (why wouldn't they? It's kind of important, and they knew the race was close). The timing company never updated the results to reflect the video review, and the results posted on the NXN-SW page is just copied from the timing company. Kind of (but not really) like a few years ago, when in the NXN-Midwest boys race the originally posted results had Palatine over Neuqua Valley for third, but that was before the results were reviewed and a runner was removed from the scoring because he wasn't one of the runners designated as their top-7. It took at least a day for the results on the NXN-MW site to reflect that change.

Either that, or the meet management made the error of handing out trophies before they knew who won.

I think they may have gone back over the race with the video to sort out some of those "ties." Not sure. But the results now list Davis as first place.

The tie isn't broken in the results:

41 (24) Albrechtsen, Hannah SR Davis Xc 18:59.9
41 (24) Van Zyl, Kari SR Fort Collins Cross Countr 18:59.9

And they are both listed as being the #24 scorer in the team results section:

1 Davis XC 73 1:33:15.500
6 Aubrey ARGYLE 18:19.7 8 Taylor COX 18:22.3 14 Ashley TYNDALL 18:43.3
21 Kenzie WEIR 18:50.3 24 Hannah ALBRECHTSEN 18:59.9
(27) Ally GEISLER 19:01.8 (32) Sierra GRAHAM 19:07.5

2 Fort Collins Cross Country 73 1:32:59.100
3 Lauren GREGORY 17:49.2 11 Devynn MILLER 18:35.4 15 Audrey OWEIMRIN 18:44.5
20 Heather HOLT 18:50.1 24 Kari VAN ZYL 18:59.9
(35) Sam MUELLER 19:13.7 (38) Abbey ERVIN 19:16.9

... whoever crossed the line first between those two got their team the win.

Either way, a close race between two great teams!

CORRECTION.... it was 73-73 between the Davis and Ft. Collins girls and Davis actually wins the meet on the tiebreaking 6th. Davis left the meet with the second place trophy ... but the results have been corrected. Either way it was very close and both teams are qualified for NXN.

Are they sure on the correction?

I got the same thing when adding it up on my own, but then I noticed the whole not breaking ties for runners with the same time issue (FC #5 and Davis #5 are both listed as finishing 41st) - if FC's #5 outleaned Davis' #5, instead of tying, then it would be FC winning by 1; if Davis' #5 crossed first, then it is a tie.

Talked with Corbin Talley just now. Here's what the Davis coach had to say:

On the boys:

"We kept telling them we believed in them. I guess it worked. We thought there are 10 teams that could be second in this race so why not us? We saw 10 close teams and felt like all season long we had been on the verge of a breakthrough. Our second man (Stockton Smith) should have been second all season but he had injuries and asthma problems. At state he was our fifth. If he has been our fifth today we would have gotten fourth. He was huge for us. And we knew having him healthy was going to be a difference-maker for us."

On the water-feature/ditches:
"We told them to enjoy it and we did. Every time I saw one of our kids they were attacking the ditch. They attached it and we flew through it."

On the girls:

"First of all, Fort Collins is amazing and they do this every year. We get to a point in the season where we start thinking maybe they're not good this year and then they run good at Southwest. We knew we'd be in a fight."

"It was not as strong as we can be by any means. I thought the girls yesterday were a little tired. It was not our best but we'll take it. We left the meet with the second-place trophy (but apparently Davis won on a tiebreaker, which Talley saw on the NXN SW web site). I think we learned a few lessons today that we will take with us the next two weeks. Whether we end up first or second, I think it's good to have a little adversity. The girls kind of cruised during the season. They raced hard, but this challenge (today) is good for us and will help us out more than anything else. We know we're strong. Hopefully that one point motivates us."

Can't say Portland is the only place with standing water ... just sayin ;)

Have to think Monarch is going to look pretty strong as a potential At-Large ... that close in such a good region shouldn't be ignored.

OK.... I finally have some details to report.

Boys --
American Fork 111
Davis 163
Mountain Vista 209

Girls --
Fort Collins 73
Davis 74
Monarch 83

Yes, US#2 Davis girls go down by a point on the way to qualifying with the second berth.

Crazy racing conditions brought on by 3 straight days of rain, which led to lots of mud and a run-off ditch that was full and required athletes to cross it 5-6 times. It was described as running through a steeplechase pit, but with mud.

Geberkidane went out very fast, like 4:30-something for the mile ... but Utah's Conner Mantz was not far from reeling him in at the end ... probably 20 seconds faster over the final mile than Cerake.

American Fork's No. 1 today was Jacklin because Connor McMillan has been sick and did not run great today.

Awards going on now ... I have heard that Davis UT BOYS got in by placing second. Still waiting for the rest.
DougB
Conner Mantz second

Zachary Jacklin third

Girls race ... Elise Cranny in 17:03, Lucy Biles about 30 seconds back for second.

Cerake Geberkidane won the NXN Southwest boys championship race today.

15:17 unofficially.

Please let us know your thoughts at the course today if you have the chance to do so.

I think the races are huge. I don't think they have to worry about heat this year in the championship races. It has been raining for 3 days straight and it's supposed to be cool and overcast all day Saturday. We went over to the course last night and there was standing water in many places and the ditches that they run through four times had 6 inches of water in them. If any thing the course could be torn up, muddy, and slow for the championship races.
