UC freshman McLaughlin rips 38.55 for 300

RESULTS

 

Freshman Sydney McLaughlin of Union Catholic ran 38.55 seconds for 300 on Saturday at the Bishop Loughlin Games at New York City's Armory and peeled the lid off the indoor track and field season. 

 

McLaughlin missed the national freshman record by .02 seconds and broke a 29-year-old New Jersey state record. The old state record of 38.79 set by Wendy Vereen had stood since 1984.


Other meet highlights include:

 

- Olivia Baker of Columbia High won the 600 meters in 1:33.35, less than two seconds faster than runner-up Emma Gallagher of Garden City.

 

- Denise Branch of Benjamin Cardozo won the mile in 5:03.17. 

 

- Westhill (CT) standout Claire Howlett won the two-mile in 10:48.16.

 

- Torie Robinson of Winslow Township ran 7.10 to win the 55 meters.

 

- Ashley Wiggins of New Rochelle took the 55-meter hurdles in 8.20.

 

- Elwood/John Glenn's Sarah Hardie edged Kellenberg's Jazmine Fray in the 1,000 with a winning time of 3:01.73.

 

- In the relays, it was New Rochelle in the 4x200 (1:42.00), Uniondale in the 4x400 (3:59.34) and Bronxville in the 4x800m (9:26.53).

 

- Field event winners included Medgar Evers' Shayla Broughton and Germantown Academy's Megan McCloskey in the high jump (5-6), Newtown's Jenna Calandro in the pole vault (12-0), Owen J. Roberts' Holly Sullivan in the long jump (18-8), Kellenberg's Mellony Belot in the triple jump (37-8) and Padua's Ashley Muschialti in the shot put (40-8.75).

 

- Kyle Levermore of Don Bosco defended his two-mile title by running 9:15.49.

 

- Union Catholic's Obafemi Animashaun ran 7.54 to win the 55-meter hurdles. 

 

- Richard Rose, junior from Boys & Girls of Brooklyn, clocked 1:19.20 to win the 600 meters and break the meet record. That's a PR and faster than his US#1 from last winter (1:19.41).
