Coverage from The Armory kicks off 2014

Happy New Year, everyone.

I just want to relay a DyeStat programming note. This morning I landed in NYC and will spend the next two and a half months covering the action at the New Balance Track and Field Center (aka The Armory).

I hope to tell the story of world's busiest indoor track through stories and videos during my stay in Washington Heights and there will be a steady stream of content.

It begins this weekend with the massive Hispanic Games, a two-day high school track meet with upwards of 6,000 competitors filling every nook and cranny of the 102-year-old building.

That's the thing about the Armory. During the big meets like the Hispanic Games, or New Balance Indoor Nationals, there is nothing like the the day-long wall-to-wall action that happens here. This is one of the facilities, like Hayward Field in Eugene or Franklin Field in Philadelphia, that literally props up the entire sport of track and field in the U.S.

This isn't my first time to 169th Street and Fort Washington Avenue. Last year I spent four months working full-time with the Armory staff, learning a thing or two about meet management and what goes into the day-to-day operations of the building.

It's a special place and always seemingly evolving. This year's changes include a spruced up timing booth, a few precious extra feet of space near the finish line, an extra lane for the straightaway sprints, and new Mondo surface.

Indoor track is big here on the East coast and in New York City it might even be bigger and more important than the spring season. I know that flies in the face of convention for track and field coaches and athletes in the West, but it's true.

The track at The Armory has been, and remains, one of the sport's ultimate proving grounds. And it's been that way for generations.

Stay tuned as we try to deliver a taste of the action.

Welcome to the snowy northeast. Looks like this will be a banner year for indoor track at the Armory...
