(16-Jan) -- Mary Cain and Galen Rupp set significant records tonight at the Boston University Multi-Team Meet in Boston while coach Alberto Salazar looked on.

In the women's 1000m, the 17 year-old Cain from Bronxville, N.Y., clocked a new world indoor junior record of 2:39.25.  The previous mark of 2:40.1 was set by American Diana Richburg in New London, Conn., back in 1982.  Cain just edged Nike Oregon Project teammate and USA 1500m champion Treniere Moser, who clocked 2:39.32, a personal best.

Cain now holds USA junior indoor records for 1000m, 1500m (4:11.72), mile (4:28.25), 3000m (9:04.51), and two miles (9:38.68).  Should she break 2:01.8 for 800m later this indoor season --she is running that event at the NYRR Millrose Games on Feb. 15-- she will have all the American indoor junior records from 800m to two miles.

Also tonight, Galen Rupp broke Lopez Lomong's American indoor 5000m record, clocking 13:01.26.  Lomong's mark of 13:07.00 was set at New York's Armory last March.  Rupp's time is also a USA all-comer's record.  Kenya's Sam Chelanga finished second in 13:04.35, a personal best, followed by Rupp's Canadian training partner, Cam Levins, who ran 13:19.16.  That mark broke Jason Bunston's 1997 Canadian record of 13:25.87.
