NB Games pushing a thousand in the 1,000

The New Balance Games has become the newest giant on the Armory's busy track schedule.

Over the Friday-Saturday meet in New York City nearly 6,000 high school athletes will compete and there are also a handful of pro events featuring Olympians like Will Claye, Duane Solomon and Morgan Uceny.

That pro component was expanded this year with the idea that it is becoming the first stop on a "circuit" that includes the Millrose Games in three weeks.

But the high school portion has also grown by leaps and bounds over the past year, meet director Tim Fulton said.

"The idea was that a late January invitational style meet that had open events as opposed to all relays might suit the high school community a little better," Fulton said. "This lets people get some qualifying times and gets the level of the meet up to a new level."

The bedrock event this weekend is the 1,000 meters. At last count there are 940 athletes entered in the 1,000 across all sections.

"When you look at the Hispanic Games, there were like 750 boys in the mile," Fulton said. "There's no real mile this weekend besides the invitationals so it's the easy event," he said. "An 800 kid can go up and the two-mile kids can come down. It seems like an event that anyone can do and it's (proven to be) popular."

The invitational events include some strong fields. Laura Leff of West Genesse (N.Y.) and Tiana Guevara of Miller Place (N.Y.) are the top contenders in the girls mile. UPDATE: Josette Norris of Tenafly (N.J.) will make her season debut in the race after being sidelined with a foot injury suffered in the New Jersey Meet of Champs cross country meet.

Arianne Strunkey of Taft and Symone Darius of New Rochelle lead the field in the girls 300, while Kiambu Gall of Paul Robeson is in the boys' race.

Louis Colson from Edison (Va.) is coming up for the mile and if the sanctioning works out Miles Irish from Palos Verdes (Calif.) could be in the mix.

Keturah Orji of Mount Olive (N.J.) is entered in the long jump and will make her first appearance at The Armory this season.
