Orji Sweeps Jumps To Lead NJ Varsity Classic

By Chris Lotsbom for ArmoryTrack.com

One of the strongest meets of the season was held this evening at The New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, as the New Jersey Varsity Classic took center stage. Teams from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania competed throughout the afternoon and evening, providing some fantastic performances.

- Mt. Olive (NJ) senior Keturah Orji dominated both the triple and long jump, winning with leaps of 44-00 and 20-1.5 feet, respectively. Both were meet records, and her triple jump mark ranks second all-time for high schoolers.

- Boys Distance Medley Relay: Anchored by Kyle Levermore, Don Bosco Prep ran a US#1 time of 10:13.4 to narrowly defeat Pennsylvania's West Chester Henderson (10:15.3). West Chester Henderson was anchored by Tony Russell, who will race the New Balance High School Mile at the NYRR Millrose Games on February 15.

- Todd Uckermark of Warwick Valley tied the meet record in the Boys pole vault, clearing 16 feet

- Kyle Francis of Bensalem won the Boys 800m in 1:54.4, a time that ranks in the top ten nationally. Later on in the evening, he came back to win the mile thanks to a fast kick on the final lap. His winning time was 4:22.5.

- Olivia Baker anchored Columbia's Distance Medley Relay to a victory in 12:02.1, a new US#1 time by .2 of a second. Joining Baker on the relay were Imani Coleman, Cheyenne Trigg, and Emilie Cowan. The Stanford-bound Baker wasn't done, though. She returned to the track to win the 200 meters in 24.4 seconds, a time that ranks in the top five among American high schoolers.

- South Brunswick ran a meet record of 7:52.6 in the Boys 4X800m relay.

- Kyle Kroon of Toms River South won the 3200m in 9:17.4, the third fastest time in the nation this season.

Other notable winners included:
- Union Catholic's Obafemi Animashaun in the Boys 55m Hurdles, timing 7.5 seconds

- Animashaun's teammate, Jordan Jimerson, took the 200 meters in 21.8 seconds

- Haisha Bisiolu of Union winning the Girls 55m dash in 7.1 seconds

- Erin Jashot of Tappan Zee took the Girls 800m in 2:15.9- Summit's David Connolly won the Boys 55m dash in 6.3 seconds
