NATIONAL HONORS ON THE LINE AT THE NEW BALANCE NATIONALS INDOOR

New York, March 11, 2014 – Recognized as the national championship for high school indoor track & field, the New Balance Nationals Indoor will take place Friday-Sunday (March 14-16) at The Armory .
Top boys teams include Union Catholic (Scotch Plains, NJ), Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, NJ), Cheltenham High School (Wyncote, Pa), Edna Karr High School (New Orleans), and Knightdale High School (Knightdale, NC). New Rochelle High School in nearby Westchester County and Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J. are the premier girl programs along with Parkland High School (Winston-Salem, N.C.) , La Salle Academy (Providence, RI), Garden City High School (Garden City, NY), and Uniondale High School (Uniondale, NY).

Here are New Balance Nationals Indoor top headline makers from New York and New Jersey.
·         All eyes will be on the country’s top-ranked Union Catholic’s Boys’ 4x200m relay (1:28.02), 4x400m relay (3:16.12) and its second-ranked Sprint Medley Relay squad (3:33.36). Leading Union Catholic will be the All-American duo of Taylor Mclaughlin (ranked second nationally in the 400m with a 47.30 time) and Obafemi Animashaun (No. 11 in the nation in 55m hurdles, 7.48 seconds).
·         Christian Brothers boasts the defending New Balance Nationals Indoor champion in 4xMile relay. The Colts’ top performers are Tom Rooney (currently ranked No. 4 in 1600m in 4:14.26; No. 6 in 3200m, 9:11.50), Mike McClemens, (No. 6 in 1600m, 4:15.15) and Blaise Ferro (No. 7 in the nation in 3200m, 9:12.76).
·         Nearby New Rochelle will be a fan favorite, especially with its talented No. 2 ranked girls’ 4x200m squad (1:39.36). Members of the Huguenots’ relay are no stranger to the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, having won this year’s Armory Collegiate Invitational and New Balance Games and placing third in the 107th NYRR Millrose Games. New Rochelle is led by sophomore Symone Darius (No. 2 nationally in both 200m and 300m) and senior hurdler Ashley Wiggins, ranked No. 1 in New York and No. 4 nationally.
·         The girls’ foremost sprint program belongs to Columbia High School, with No. 1 teams in the nation in the 4x200 (1:38.99), 4x400 (3:46.42), and 4x800m (9:05.40). Like New Rochelle, Columbia also calls The Armory its home. This year the Cougars have posted wins in the 107th NYRR Millrose Games, Armory Collegiate Invitational and Eastern States Championship. Stanford-bound Olivia Baker is Columbia’s top sprinter and is ranked in the top 20 nationally in five separate events.
·          Having posted a victory in the New Balance Games in 2014, Garden City boasts the country’s premier girls Sprint Medley Relay team (4:07.78). Garden City’s 4x400m squad is No. 9 in the country after its runner-up showing in last month’s NYRR Millrose Games. Emma Gallagher is exceptional in long sprints/middle distance events as she’s ranked No. 2 in the country in the 600m (1:32.13).
·         Uniondale High School girls’ 4x400 team is fresh off first-place showings in both the NYRR Millrose Games and New Balance Games and is ranked No. 4 in the nation (3:52.54). Coming off a third place in the New Balance Games, Uniondale’s 4x200 relay squad (1:42.17) is No. 10 nationally. Keep an eye on Uniondale sophomore Kristiana Cherrington and juniorCrystal Green.
