Freier breaks HS PV record at Texas Relays

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

For Desiree Freier, the process of re-writing the record book never truly feels like it has "sunk in."

The senior from Justin Northwest (Texas) continued the momentum from a several 14-foot clearances, including a national indoor record, and smashed the U.S. high school outdoor record on Saturday at Texas Relays with 14 feet, 3.25 inches.

Keep in mind it's only March. Freier, who is committed to Arkansas next fall, could continue to break her own record over and over for the next four months.

"I thought I was really prepared," Freier said of her record jump Saturday, which displaced Morgann Leleux (La.) from No. 1 on the all-time list. "I had jumped 14 (feet) indoors and I knew I had everything in place."

Freier moved up in pole size, jumping on a 14-foot pole weight-rated for 116 pounds and with a flex of 18.9. She grips at 13-5 and therefore cleared a bar more than eight inches over her hands.

Freier is a cool customer who doesn't celebrate her records with a lot of hoopla. There were a couple of hugs and then she was back in business, trying to make 14-6.

A week ago, Freier had made 14 feet outdoors at a smaller meet but then missed at the record height.

She was happy to get it done in front of a big Texas Relays crowd.

"It was great," Freier said. "The weather was great and the crowd was amazing. I loved it. I think the biggest thing that helped me was the tailwind and moving onto a bigger stick."
Freier has a habit of quickly focusing on the next bar, and not her records.

"It hasn't sunk in that I broke the state record last year," she said. "I know I did it but I still don't believe it. I guess I've always been very humble about (records)."

If she stays healthy, Saturday's record won't be her last. She has targeted 14-9 as her season goal. And if she can make that, she will set her sights on 15-1.
