Cain over injury, 2014 schedule not yet set

The calf injury that prevented Mary Cain from competing at the IAAF World Indoor Championships is no longer an issue but some of her racing plans for the 2014 outdoor season are not yet set in stone.

Alberto Salazar, coach of Cain and Nike's Oregon Project, told DyeStat that she "is doing fine."

"(She is) completely healthy," Salazar said. "She just took two weeks off from running to let the leg heal, but only one week off of (doing) nothing. She started cross training in the second week, so basically the exact same schedule as the rest of the group but she started (her time off) a week earlier."

There are still decisions to be made about her competition schedule as she juggles professional track and the final few months of her senior year at Bronxville High School in New York. Cain owns U.S. high school and junior records between 800 meters and 5,000 but it is uncertain whether she will compete for a berth at the IAAF World Juniors Championships this July in Eugene, Ore.

Salazar said Cain would open her season "possibly" at the Drake Relays (April 23-27) or Payton Jordan Invitational one week later.

"We're trying to fit in races around her AP tests and proms," Salazar said. "Definitely no Oxy (High Performance Meet, May 15) because she's got two AP tests that day."

The World Relays (May 24-25) are a possibility and the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on May 31 is "definite," Salazar said.

Another itinerary item that is certain is that Cain, 10th in the world in the 1,500 meters last season, will compete in Europe. The Monaco Grand Prix, July 18, is probably the latest date she would run overseas.

"We don't know if she'll want to run USA Juniors instead of Seniors in order to qualify for (World Juniors)," Salazar said.

Also, Cain is due to move to Portland in mid-August so that she can start college classes at the University of Portland on Aug. 25. She would like to spend some time with her family before leaving for college, her coach said.

"However," Salazar said. "There has been no firm decision either way."

"We're trying to fit in races around her AP tests and proms," When was the last time you ever heard a Pro schedule conflict like that? Hillarious! Jordan Hasay was Valedictorian of her 2009 Class at Mission College Preparatory HS which was also all over Dyestat, YouTube, etc. When you're that good, that young, you learn how to play the fame game early.
