Leavitt gets it done for Davis UT 4x400 relay

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

It's all there in the photo. That's Trevor Leavitt, flat on his back after anchoring the Davis UT 4x400 relay team to an improbable come-from-behind victory on Saturday at the Herriman Invitational.

There is a mixture of agony and satisfaction and a hint of smile-for-the-camera awareness.

But there's a moment here as well, captured and preserved by Davis assistant coach Brad Anderson. Leavitt, a senior headed to BYU, took the stick 35 meters behind the anchor from West Jordan. He made up all of that deficit and won the race for his teammates -- one of those thrilling 4x4 relay carries that can electrify at track meet.

Leavitt split 46.60 according to the timing company. The Davis head coach, Corbin Talley, and two of his assistants held watches that read: 46.49, 46.53 and 46.59.

It was 40 degrees and windy on the backstretch and Leavitt, who earlier went 21.74 (wind-aided, 2.1) and 48.87, ran on sheer determination.

"My attitude was I love the 4x4 team that I'm on," Leavitt said. "Rylee Chilcote was not having a good day. He wasn't happy with his split. So as he came up to hand me the baton he looked at me like 'I'm sorry.' And my look back to him was 'I got this. I got this.'"

Leavitt tore off with the intention of making everything OK for his teammates with no regard for time or pacing.

"When I was running that was all I was thinking about: Catch him. Catch him," Leavitt said. "The (West Jordan anchor) kept looking back and it sort of made me mad."

Leavitt crossed the finish line and collapsed happily.

The relay split may indicate that Leavitt, already the Utah 5A 400 champion, could have a shot at the all-time state best of 47.01 (Tyler Crow of Clearfield, 2000).

Leavitt has already run 47.69 in the 400 this season but could get an opportunity to go faster this week at the Arcadia Invitational in California.

"I'm super excited about Arcadia. It's a great team-building (trip) and I'll go down there and see where I am against (a really good field)," he said.

And if he runs with the same abandon and focus as he showed on that relay -- maybe the Utah record is within reach.
