Sarah Baxter didn’t toe the starting line at Friday’s Ventura County Championships, but she was taking part in the festivities, supporting teammates, and even taking a photo with 3200 High School national record holder Kim Mortensen.Sarah Baxter and Kim Mortensen

According to Simi Valley Coach Roger Evans, Sarah was diagnosed with a stress reaction in her shin just before the Arcadia Invitational.  Thankfully they caught it before it became a major problem, and Sarah has been maintaining her fitness through aqua jogging.  She added limited running to her aqua-jogging routine about two weeks ago.

With the reduced miles, the emphasis is all on quality according to Evans.  He has been steadily increasing her mileage and she completed her first full track workout this week. Sarah looked very good in the workout, running a series of 800’s, 400’s, and 200’s at a progressively faster pace.  Her longest run will be up to five miles this weekend.

We can expect to see Sarah back on the track next Friday, where she will compete in the 3200 at the Marmonte League Finals in her first step toward the 2014 CIF State Championships.  The three-time State 3200 Champion hopes to make it four in a row in June, but she may face her toughest competition ever in Anna Maxwell and Bethan Knights. Still, anyone who has met Sarah knows she’s fiercely competitive, and she won’t go down without a fight. Stay tuned.
