All-time records tumble in Idaho

State Meet Highlights

Not only did numerous state classification records fall at Boise (4A/5A) and Middleton (3A/2A/1A), but there were five new all-time Idaho records – courtesy of Elijah Armstrong (1600), Elsja Mecham (100 hurdles), Josh Barclay (shot put) and Cambree Harbaugh (triple jump and long jump).

Top Performances:

- Elijah Armstrong, junior from Pocatello, didn't get to go head to head with the state's other distance star, Andrew Rafla, but he had the best meet in Class 4A. Armstrong won three events impressively with 1:54.42 in the 800, 4:09.04 in the 1600 and 9:00.73 in the 3200. The 1600 time is an all-time state best.

- Elsja Mecham, a sophomore from Rigby, has proven to be a hurdles sensation in Idaho. She broke the all-time state record in the 300 hurdles at BYU Invite (42.56). At state, she broke the state record in the 100 hurdles (14.20) and added titles in the 400 (57.00) and 300 hurdles (42.93).

- Josh Barclay of 4A Minico threw US#7 64-9 and broke the all-time state record by six inches (Zeb Sion, 2001).

- Cambree Harbaugh of Mountain View, a San Jose State signee, went 41-1 in the triple jump to smash the all-time state best in that event. Meet officials did not use a wind gauge, so nationally it will show up as NWI. But it's the longest jump in state history. On Friday she went 19-6.75 in the long jump for another all-time state. She was also second in the 100 meters and fifth in the 5A 200.

- Emily Hamlin of Boise swept the 5A distance events impressively, taking the 800 (2:13.23), 1600 (4:55.06) and 3200 (10:47.02). And then she took the baton for a leg of the 4x400 as well. In all three of her distance races, she sat on Mountain View's Sam McKinnon before outkicking her in the final lap. "Honestly, our whole coaching staff is speechless," Boise coach Cori Mooney told the Idaho Statesman.

- Andrew Rafla of Timberline dominated the 5A distance events, doubling up the 1600 (4:10.33 for a classification record) and 3200 (9:17.81).

Top Teams:

Rocky Mountain won its fourth consecutive Class 5A boys title with 119 points. Mountain View's girls won their third team championship in four years.

In Class 4A, Skyview's boys won their first title with 77 points. Hagen Graves was a big part of that effort, with wins in the 100, 200 and he had a hand in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay titles. Mecham's four victories helped Rigby win the girls title.

Top Competition: It was a battle of Madison vs. Maddison in the Class 5A girls 200 that drew together the victors of the 100 (Maddison Ward) and the 400 (Madison Lung). Both dipped under 25 seconds with a 3.4 tailwind, but Ward pulled it out with a 24.82 to 24.91 victory over Lung.

Record-breakers: Records fell all over the place in Idaho, which has gotten more competitive across the board in recent years. Harbaugh is the greatest horizontal jumper in state history, Mecham is the top hurdler, Barclay the best shot-putter and Armstrong and Rafla are without a doubt the top distance runners Idaho has produced. Another near-miss might have been Zion Stuffle of Lewiston, who could have possibly taken down the 300 hurdles record if he hadn't been disqualified for a lane violation.
