State Meet Highlights

New Mexico conducts its state championships for 3A, 4A and 5A schools a week after the A and 2A meet. There are a few quirks to how the meet operates. Individual events score 7-5-4-3-2-1, but relay victories are worth more: 10-8-6-4-2-1. The championship is held at the University of New Mexico (elevation 5,335 feet). Tiffany Garcia’s triple in the 4A sprints and Mike Burdick’s double in the 5A throws stand out as highlights.

Top Performances:

- Tiffany Garcia of Santa Fe broke the all-time state record for the 200 meters in the prelims with 24.17. She later won that event with a 24.44 final, plus picked up victories in the 100 (12.11) and 400 (55.58).

- Mike Burdick of Volcano Vista joined the 60-foot club in the shot put with US#39 60-0.50. He paired that with a victory in the discus with 168-3.

- The Cleveland (Abq) 4x400 relay teams both stepped up big at the end of the meet. The Cleveland girls ran 3:54.80 for a new state record and the boys ran 3:16.72, just missing the record by a sliver.

- Zhianna Flores of Piedra Vista broke the state record in the 4A girls 300 hurdles with 42.89 seconds.

- Beau Clafton of Piedra Vista threw US#9 202-10 to win the 4A javelin.

- Matthew Jackson of Rio Rancho jumped 23-4 to win the 5A long jump.

- Lauren Martinez of Eldorado, already the state record holder in the girls pole vault (13-3), won the 5A title at 12-3.

- The LaCueva girls 4x200 relay team broke the state record with 1:41.51 and the Rio Rancho girls went after the state record in the SMR and got it with 4:07.74.

Top Teams:

The Cleveland boys capped their season off with a 4x400 relay win to put the team over 100 points (102) as they easily captured the 5A title. The Eldorado girls also won, with 107 points.

In 4A, Farmington won the boys crown with 64 points and Aztec eked out a 78-77 win over Santa Fe for the girls title. In the all-important 4x400, Aztec outscored Santa Fe 8-1. Taos swept the 3A titles.

Top Competition: The boys 5A 800 meters was a barn-burner, with Samuel Carrasco of Hobbs edging Frankie Scorfina of Cibola 1:53.39 to 1:53.66.

Record-breakers: Garcia got the 200-meter record in the prelims when her legs were still fresh. The record she beat was 24.50 by Terri Florence of Eldorado in 1984. Flores became the first girl in the state to dip under 43 seconds in the 300 hurdles. Cleveland’s girls 4x4 squad edged ahead of the 2013 Eldorado girls (3:55.37) on the state’s all-time list. La Cueva (4x2) and Rio Rancho (SMR) also moved the needle for girls performances in New Mexico.
