Ostrander adds 1600 record to her laurels

State Meet Highlights

The Alaska state meet is separate by Class 4A (less than 30 schools) and everyone else is in Class 3A/2A/1A. Teams travel vast distances to the somewhat centralized location of Dimond High School in Anchorage. The big news out of Alaska all year has been the talented distance duo of Levi Thomet (Kodiak) and Allie Ostrander (Kenai Central) and both of them delivered again.

Top Performances:

- Allie Ostrander tripled with performances that stack up against any in the country. She won the 800 in 2:15.30, the 1600 in 4:49.48 (a new all-time state best) and the 3200 in 10:13.87. Ostrander has run sub-10:20 five times this season.

- Levi Thomet pulled off the same workhorse hat trick as Ostrander on the boys side, winning the 800 in 1:58.84, the 1600 in 4:23.16 and the 3200 in 9:31.60. The junior is in a class by himself and has one more year to see if he can approach Trevor Dunbar level.

- Junior Peggy Mathis of Colony is the fastest girl in Alaska and proved it by winning the 100 (12.71), the 200 (25.37) and the 400 (58.57). She also won the long jump with 17-2.50 for four wins and 40 teams points.

- C.J. Parker of Dimond almost matched Mathis' feat. He was second in the 100 to Charles Sudduth but won the 200 and the 400.

- Leroy Elliott three of West Anchorage was the high point scorer for the boys with three wins and a third place. The senior won both hurdles race and the triple jump, and was third in the high jump.

- Naomi Welling of Thunder Mountain, a sophomore, won both the 100 and 300 hurdles and also the triple jump (37-0).

- Ed Hall of Eagle River won the discus (166-2) and shot put (51-4).

Top Teams:

Dimond won the boys title on its home track, pulling big points out of the jumps and Parker in the sprints, and scoring 105 points. On the girls side, Mathis' four victories set the table for Colony to take the team title with 61 points.

Top Competition: In a high quality showdown in the girls 200 meters, the separation was just .008 seconds. Mathis got the victory in 25.366 seconds. Sophomore Katherine Hines of South Anchorage was second in 25.374. The all-time Alaska best is 25.06 (Andrea Cook of Bartlett, 2006) and both Mathis and Hines were in the ballpark.

Record-breaker: Ostrander is now without a doubt the best female distance runner in Alaska prep history and her 4:49.48 victory in the 1600 is US#21. It also surpassed Betsy Haines' 1977 state mile record.
