State Meet Highlights

The Maryland (MPSSAA) state championships include four classifications and are held at Morgan State in Baltimore. Wind played some havoc on the meet this year, causing most of the really good sprint performances to be wind-aided. Two of the state's best track athletes, Darryl Haraway of DeMatha Catholic and Ellie Gonzalez of The Catholic School, do not compete in the MPSSAA.

Top Performances:

- Martha Sam of J.H. Blake ran 54.52 in the 400 meters and ran anchor on the 4x400 relay squad that ran US#19 3:47.76.

- Robert Carter of Long Reach won the 3A hurdles events in 14.22/37.74 – both wind-legal -- and was also part of winning 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

- Akosa Carrington of Western Tech won 2A titles in the 100-200-400 with 10.62w, 21.15w and 48.45.

- Maggie Sullivan of Boonsboro won the 2A hurdles races in 14.28w and 43.39 and was also on a winning 4x400 relay team.

- Jackie McNulty of Oakdale won the 2A long jump (17-6.50) and triple jump (38-5.50) for Oakdale.

- Meggan Grams of Boonsboro doubled 4:56.94 and 10:55.95 in the 2A 1600/3200.

- Shania Collins took charge of the 3A sprints, locking down victories with 11.81w and 23.97w for Huntingtown.

- Toni Brown of Milford Mill ran 24.23 for third place in the 3A 200, won the 400 in 56.26 and was part of her team's 3:52.42 4x400 win.

- Freshman Stephanie Davis of Magruder stepped up big in the 4A sprints, winning in 12.01w and 24.47w. She was also on winning 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

- Ryan Forsyth of Severna Park ran 9:14.53 to win the 4A 3200.

-Nora McUmber, a junior from Bethesda-CC , got a pair of victories in the 4A 1600 (5:01.74) and the 3200 (10:45.68).

Top Teams:

It was an incredibly close 4A girls race and it ended in a tie between Col. Magruder and Henry Wise, both with 50 points. Clarksburg finished third with 48. Bowie, which got big victories in the 4x200 (1:26.57) and 4x400 (3:18.61), won the 4A boys title with 85 points.

In Class 3A, Huntingtown outlasted Milford Mill 83-79 for the girls crown and Long Reach scored 68 on the boys side. In Class 2A, the Oakdale girls edged Boonsboro 85-83 and Frederick Douglass-PG boys won with 117.5 points. In Class 1A, the team champions were Manchester Valley (girls) and Pikesville (boys).

Top Competition: The2A boys pole vault saw three athletes break the meet record – all with clearances at 15 feet. But while Chandler Kennell, Nick Neral and Jason Barnes will share the meet record, they did not share in the spoils of victory. Kennell won the competition based on fewer misses at lower heights and his Century teammate, Neral, was second. Barnes placed third.

Record-breaker: While no big records were set, the Bowie boys 4x200 relay team clearly had its eye on one. Bowie ran US#28 1:26.57 but fell just a little bit short of Henry Wise's 2012 meet record 1:26.25.
