Central Bucks South girls break 4x800 record

State Meet Highlights

The Pennsylvania (PIAA) state championships are held at Shippensburg University and conducted with two classifications – AAA (bigger schools) and AA (smaller). This is a massive meet that produces more than 1,000 DyeStat TFX elite performances. There is strong depth throughout but it was a special year for distance running in the Keystone State, even with the absence of Foot Locker champion Tessa Barrett, mourning the death of her father.

Top Performances:

- Ross Wilson of Council Rock North scored something of an upset – as well as a meet record – when he closed down on Tony Russell of West Chester Henderson and passed him on the final straightaway to win the boys 3,200, 8:56.29 to 8:58.26. Russell, running in pain, was gutting through it with a possible stress fracture.

- Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic won the AA 1600 in 4:45.99. She also won the 800 meters in 2:09.46.

- Brianna Schwartz, junior from Shaler Area, won the AAA title in the 1600 with 4:46.95 and needed every bit to fend off Madeleine Davison, who ran 4:47.06 for second.

- The Central Bucks South girls broke an all-time state record with their victory in the 4x800 in 8:51.49. It was a race that produced three of the top six performances in the country.

- Kyle Francis of Bensalem ran US#7 1:49.57 to win a AAA 800 final that saw three go under 1:51.50.

- Zach Brehm of Carlisle Area, fourth in the 800, won the 1600 in 4:11.73.

- Chance Post of Conestoga Valley ran US#15 36.93 to win the AAA 300 hurdles.

- Junior Courtney McCartney of Selinsgrove Area threw US#5 49-0.25 to win the AAA shot put.

- Katelyn Jackson of Cheltenham was the state's top female sprinter. She doubled in the AAA meet with 11.78 and 23.93.

- Ciera Leonard of Cheltenham won the 100 hurdles in the AAA meet with 13.89 seconds. She also went 13.65 in the prelims.

- Markeeta Thomas of Paul Robeson won AA titles in the 100 hurdles (14.13) and 300 hurdles (43.49).

- Jordan Bryan of St. Joe's Prep won the AAA long jump with 24-0.

- Madeline Holmberg of Hempfield Area won the AAA long jump with 20-1.

- Max Adams of Hempfield Area doubled in the SP/DT with 61-4.25 and 198-3 (US#5).

- Jhett Janis of Coalico won a tight javelin competition with 203-11 to Luke Smorey's 203-0.

- The boys from State College won the high quality 4x800 relay in US#12 7:41.99.

- Marissa Sheva of Pennridge passed Regan Rome of Dallas to win the AAA 3200 in 10:25.85.

- Jenna Lucas of Fort Cherry threw 153-5 to win the AA javelin title.

Top Teams:

In a team competition where more than 80 schools score on each side of the gender divide, the AAA championship trophies went to the Hempfield Area girls (52 points) and the Cheltenham boys (41 points).

In Class AA, the Paul Robeson girls scored 62 points to win handily, thanks to Thomas and relay/sprint power. Springfield Township scored 38 points to win the boys title.

Top Competition: Christian Brissett of Cheltenham was a big cog in the schools' push for a state title, but his victory in the 200 over Demetrius Lanier of East Stroudsburg went to the thousandths. Brissett and Lanier were both timed officially in 21.52 but Brissett was awarded the victory after examination of the finish photo. Lanier, running his fifth race of the meet, was tired but came on to challenge Brissett in the final 20 meters.

Record-breaker: The Central Bucks South quartet of Kaitlin Poiesz, Amber Stratz, Alexa Kwapinski and Brianna Stratz smashed the state record in the 4x800 – an event with proud history in Pennsylvania – with 8:51.49. And they did it decisively, taking almost four seconds off the old record.
