Aragon, Morley unstoppable in Montana

State Meet Highlights

The Montana state championships are held in two locations simultaneously. The AA (largest schools) and C (smallest) classes competed in Great Falls. The A and B classes competed in Butte. Montana is vast state with a lot of very small schools so there are only 14 AA schools. The big stars this year were Makena Morley of Class B Bigfork and Christina Aragon of Class AA Billings Senior.

Top Performances:

- Believe it or not, Makena Morley of Bigfork was actually second in all three of her state championship Class B races as a sophomore in 2013 (after winning all three as a freshman). This time, she had smooth sailing and took the 800 (2:12.62), the 1600 (4:53.83) and the 3200 (10:58.85).

- The Missoula Big Sky girls broke the all-time state record in the 4x100 relay with 48.38.

- Hailey Phillips of Plains won the Class B 400 (57.79), 200 (25.84) and 300 hurdles (43.87) and was second in the 100 hurdles.

- Dalton Dahm of Butte won the sprint double in Class AA with 10.86 and 21.70 (nwi).

- Kyle Nickol of Helena Capital won the 400 in 48.21 seconds.

- Hunter May of Bozeman swept the 1600 (4:15.46) and 3200 (9:35.09).

- Todd Ogden of Glacier threw 210-10 to win the AA javelin.

- Christina Aragon of Billings Senior was sensational winning three high quality races for titles in the AA 400 (56.72), 800 (2:11.64) and 1600 (4:56.16). She was also fourth in the 3200.

- Caroline Hardin of Bozeman, who has been nothing short of heroic in her public acknowledgement of a serioius eating disorder, won the AA 3200 title in 10:51.82.

- Morgan Sulser of Billings Senior won the 100 in 12.19 and also won the 100 hurdles in 14.30. She was second in the 300 hurdles.

- Erika McLeod of Butte had a big meet, winning the AA long jump, triple jump and 300 hurdles. She was second in the 100 hurdles.

- Marlow Schulz of Whitefish doubled in the 100 (12.40) and 200 (24.69) and also led her team to the 4x100 title in a Class A record 48.54.

- Sophomore Luke May of Whitefish threw 206-7 to win the javelin, good for US#12.

- Aptly named Ryan Grandchamp of Glasgow won the Class B 100 (11.11) and 200 (22.43).

- Bailee Parker of West Yellowstone (Enrollment: 52) won the Class C 800 (2:17.99), 1600 (5:01.75) and 3200 (11:03.89) – all by large margins.

Top Teams:

The Missoula Big Sky boys edged out Helena 59-58 to claim the Class AA team championship. Big Sky had an 11-point lead going into the 4x400 relay, which Helena won.
The Billings Senior girls, led by Aragon and Sulser, were easy winners with 100 points.

Top Competition: Christina Aragon and Carly Smiedala of Helena – both of the sophomores – had compelling races in the 400 and 800. Aragon ultimately pulled them both out, but the 400 came down to inches, 56.72 to 56.74. And in the 800, Aragon ran 2:11.64 for a stadium record in Great Falls, while Smiedala ran 2:12.28. The best thing about this matchup is that it has two more years to get even better.

Record-breaker: Morley and Aragon went on to break all-time state marks outside of Montana at lower elevations, but Big Sky's record in the 4x100 relay was the most significant at the state championship meet. Ana Jarrett and Hannah Porch, two of the main cogs in the relay, were third and fourth in the 100 meters final.
